Kaskela" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Thu, 18 Jan 2001 01:00:30 -0500 From: "David S. Kaskela" Subject: 1-17-01 Concert Hi All- Just got in from the concert at The Painted Bride. And while I may be just a little bit biased it was a show I'll never forget. Our guests included friends and family, co-workers, believers, Philly Folk Fest friends, other musicians, a State Representative and many other people special to us- well over 100 new and old fans from 2 years old to some who may even have been older than I am (now!) And a special thanks to all who brought gifts (either you didn't read or blatently ignored the 'no gifts' request) Thanks! And of course there was Susan! Looking relaxed and fit, sporting red flared leather (OK-technically Pleather) pants w/ white blouse and reunited with her long time road manager and friend Jane Paul, Susan seemed really happy to be back in her adopted home town of Philly. And the Painted Bride was a great venue, wonderful sound and acoustics, tiered theater seating and a Steinway & Sons grand piano which recently underwent a $17,000 restoration. Susan loved it!! OK- here's the setlist and a few comments from the show Time Between Trains "inspired by 30th Street Station in Philly" Petaluma Afternoon Some Other Town "written about Philly, but could apply to Chicago, Detroit or any other big city" Shade of Gray Too Many Rooms (sometimes (mis)titled This Yellow House on the list) Blue Guitar Mercy in the Sky "written by Mary Gauthier from Boston...I wish I had written this song" on the effects of addiction on a woman's life Big Car Like Bonsai J.C., Ain't I Lonely Tonight with a little "Oops, I Did It Again" from Britney Spears which led to a lyrics discussion, then to the piano where she gave us three short versions of what the song "could have sounded like" followed by the "piano portion" which lasted the rest of the show Tall Drink of Water Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter No One Needs To Know Light Sleeper Much At All So Nice Seeing You Again I Can't Be New "inspired by a title suggested by Jane and written in November" She returned for an encore on guitar Standing In My Own Way and then called Elaine and I to the stage to thank us for having her do the show, followed by Happy Birthday w/ piano accompaniment and then a capella for Elaine It was a really great evening and Susan hung out for almost an hour afterward signing CDs, eating cake and talking with everybody who approached her. Susan, thanks for the best birthday party ever!!! And "Dat's all, folks!"
