["Charlie Sweeney" Subject: ****Alert for AOL users - this is not a drill!!! HI all, Woj, keeper of the smoe.org flame has notified the listowners of a problem with the newest release of AOL, which is 6.0. Mike Connell of the Jewel and Patty Griffin list has expanded on that warning. here is the text of Mike's letter: ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I just want to alert all subscribers on this list about a problem with the new AOL 6.0 and problems it causes with all of the mailing lists hosted by smoe.org. PLEASE NOTE: this is NOT a concern if you use AOL 3.0, 4.0 or 5.0. This is only if you have AOL 6.0 or plan to upgrade to 6.0 To make a long story short, the new AOL 6.0 sends all email with "HTML formatting" and does not have an option to send just plain text. What happens then is all email sent from an AOL 6.0 account to a smoe.org mailing list is bounced (rejected) by the listserve software and is then forwarded onto the list owner for fixing/approval. The list owner then gets the post and has to do some magic and then send the post on. This of course will result in a delay for your post in reaching the list. So, if you now have AOL 6.0 and send a post and are perplexed as to why it did not show up yet or showed up hours later, you now know why. This is causing problems on other list serves across the planet, and AOL has been made aware of the problem. In the mean time, the owners of smoe.org are working on a solution with some software they can install that would automatically fix the offending AOL email and send it on without it bouncing. In the mean time, if you are active on this list and have been considering upgrading to version 6.0 of AOL, you might want to hold off a while until this problem is rectified (I will let you know when that is) Mike - list owner ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ I did some additional research, and AOL 6.0 appears to be extremely buggy. In an online poll at about.com, 68% of users reported major problems with the program, so practice safe download :-) AOL has promised a fix, and the friendly folks at smoe.org are working on one of their own. I proposed a tactical nuclear strike on AOL, but no one would go along with that. Damn. So, until such time as a fix is in place, if you are using AOL 6.0, your mail may be delayed in delivery. PS: If you or someone you know is going to the Northeast Regional Folk Alliance conference this weekend, tell them to be on the lookout for Something Black. We'll be showcasing in the informals on Saturday night, and drinking "the best beer on the planet" with Rachel Bissex at her Guerilla workshop.
