I drove there from Omaha with my fiance - we talked to her afterwards and she couldn't believe we drove that far. But I used to live in the Philadelphia area and had a chance to see her 5 times in concert out there before I moved back to Omaha where I'm originally from. After living in Omaha for a year, I was having Susan withdrawal. So in October of last year, my boyfriend took me on a road trip, but wouldn't tell me where. When we got to Ames, IA, he proposed to me (at the spot in Ames where we first started dating). I was overjoyed. Then he showed me a listing in the local paper, that Susan Werner was playing at the Maintenance Shop, two shows, and he had tickets to both! That clinced it - I definitely wanted to marry him! (We often joke about which surprise was more exciting!) So we always look for her concerts in this area. The Cedar Rapids concert was special, as it is very close to her hometown of Machester. Many of her family and friends were in the audience, and she stated, "To those of you who are related to me or who knew me as a child, please don't feel like you HAVE to come to all my concerts -- I'm doing just fine." Through careful observation, I think I deduced who her parents were in the audience, very sweet and very supportive. Her concert was explosive as always, and she charmed her way through each moment. Someone once described her concerts in this way: "You can't help but fall in love with her." Some of my favorites that I hadn't heard before were "Big Car", "Shade of Gray", and "Seeing You Again". I've always wanted to hear her sing "Attend The Sky", maybe someday. Afterwards I talked with her, told her of my fanhood in Philly and here, and she told me she's just moved to Chicago to be closer to her family. That's a big blow for Philly and the Tin Angel, but a great gain for the midwest (and for her family!). I'm working on building a fan base in the Omaha-Lincoln area, and hopefully will create an opportunity for her to play here. Until then - I will keep driving across Iowa in any weather to see her in concert, and even to Chicago! I wish her the best of luck in her new home, and congratulations to the city of Chicago! > -----Original Message----- > From: owner-believers-digest@smoe.org > [SMTP:owner-believers-digest@smoe.org] > Sent: Tuesday, November 07, 2000 2:40 AM > To: believers-digest@smoe.org > Subject: believers-digest V4 #175 > > > believers-digest Tuesday, November 7 2000 Volume 04 : Number > 175 > > > > In Today's believer's digest: > ----------------- > Re: believers-digest V4 #174 > [Rjabalos@aol.com] > Breaking the Silence - Susan in Ames, Iowa on November 3rd ["Kellie Lin > K] > > ---------------------------------------------------------------------- > > Date: Mon, 6 Nov 2000 09:03:38 EST > From: Rjabalos@aol.com > Subject: Re: believers-digest V4 #174 > > This list sure has been quiet these days! > > Personally, I'd like to know what Susan has been wearing at her shows > lately. > Each time I see her I tease her afterward about her choice of outfits, it > > has become a pretty funny running joke between us. Ok that means I'd have to greyhound or fly from Boston to NYC and back just for Susan - perhaps a little bit freakish but I'm the sort of guy who does such things... We'll see. The first time I saw Karen Savoca was at Appel Farm Arts and Music fest about 3 yrs ago. She and her partnet Pete Heitzman not only blew me away, they blew away every musician who was hanging backstage. They all rushed to the side of the stage looking for the effects box Karen was using on her voice. Weren't none :-) Karen can sing harmony with herself. Her voice can go from little girl sweet to a scream. Good tunes. Pete her guitarist is startlingly original in his approach to guitar and six string bass. Together, they soumd like a whole band. Like Susan, Karen and Pete are truly original musicians. Give them a listen.
