If you haven't heard Dennis Leary's schtik about NyQuill on his Cure For Cancer cd, it's absolutely a riot. He basically considers NyQuill a legal drug, and goes through all the ramifications of indulging. Funny stuff... We were watching some show the other night, and one of the new Viagra commercials came on, showing this too-in-shape-clean cut-40-something guy getting dressed, etc., with the voiceover doing the standard "see your doctor, etc."... when my wife started laughing out loud. I gave her the raised eyebrow (!), and she said, "Listen to the music behind it!!!" In the background was a bluesy tune with the lyrics "I'm ready.... are you ready for me???" Talk about subliminal advertising!!!!!! And now it's "See your doctor for a free sample..." Hmmm, don't street dealers use the same technique??? Hook 'em, and reeeeel 'em in.... Yes, that song is "I'm Ready" by Muddy Waters (1954). I had the tv on in the next room a couple nights ago and couldn't believe it when I heard that song being used on a commercial-- let alone one with that subject! But it is the first commercial in a while that I've sung along with. Then again, all these commercials are going too far with their use of music. Last night I went to a concert by cabaret singer Andrea Marcovicci, who mentioned her disgust that the Gershwins' "Someone to Watch Over Me" is being used in an ad for (I think) CharlesSchwabb.com. Worst of all is Wrangler using CCR's "Fortunate Son." Not only is John Fogerty being ripped off by his publishers (again), but the commercial subverts the original meaning of the song, turning it from an indictment of flag-waving jingoism into a celebration of it!
