This has been a fairly regular event since 1994 and those who have attended in the past will tell you what a magical evening is in store. Upholding our tradition of having nothing but the best on "Susan night" Denice Franke will be opening the show. What a voice! This Texas singer/songwriter will blow your socks off. Below is a review of her first CD. I am absolutely certain that Susan fans will love her. http://www.denicefranke.com/ Hope to see you soon. - -jake- Sing Out!, Summer 1998 Sometimes a recording comes from out of the blue from a new artist and whomps you upside the head. Such is Denice Franke's You Don't Know Me. Fellow Texas writer Eric Taylor produced a little masterpiece here, featuring 10 originals from Franke (pronounced Frank-ee). The opener, "Saints," grabs you with poignant irony, and its borrowing of the refrain "When the saints came marchin' in." The song paints a brilliant portrait of the meeting of two old lovers. "How'd You Know" is another tear-soaked epistle to passing love, with Iain Matthews providing supporting vocals. She breaks the mood with the more strident, upbeat "Come Back Somehow." Taylor surrounds Franke with a complete backup band, including percussion, organ and the occasional saxophone, yet lets the sound remain basically acoustic. He nicely paces the recording in terms of rhythms and levels, and keeps Franke's voice high in the mix. Her sensibilities are pop, yet the songs slip easily into the singer-songwriter genre. Mike Sumler's piano provides strong support throughout, as Franke accompanies herself on guitar. Her sweet, full, fluid voice will beguile you. Franke sings mainly about relationships. She doesn't try to solve the problems of the world. She sings about her heart and the hearts of those close to her. This may not fall strictly under the "folk" label, but this collaboration of two strong artists is acoustic and charming. Surprise yourself and listen. What a night! Although I later realized I likely had heard her when she toured with Nanci Griffith, I hadn't consciously heard of Denice Franke until the 1998 Folk Alliance Conference in Albuquerque. I was walking past a late night hotel room showcase when the voice & lyrics pulled me into the room. Here's this tall woman with long hair & a beret, and a great voice, singing about a rainy night in Detroit. I promptly forgot wherever I was heading off to and stayed through the end of her set. ... bought a copy of her CD from her, and made it a point to look for her at the 1999 conference. Perhaps not always the wry Werner twist of phrase, but also out of the ordinary. (and have to admit that "You Don't Know Me" actually gets more 'round trips' in my CD player than TBT ... though not Susan's other discs) anyhow, northeast SW fans - either head for this 10/7 gig, or check the rest of Denice's opener dates in the Northeast this fall!
