I do not like Susan Werner...or should say...did not like her. Of course when I say that, I am speaking of the music, not the woman. Saw her open for Gorka at the Old Town in Chicago, in 99. I am a Gorka-head so I guess no opening act could have won me over that night...and she was a dynamic presence, but I had no connection with the lyrics. Lyrics are what catch me. Good writing has a way of changing who you are. This weekend, I saw her again at The Great River Folk Festival in LaCrosse, WI Great intimate venue, family friendly, lots of white people (a Vance Gilbert comment) and it was her second year in a row there. I saw her in three different workshops and at the Main Stage performance. I don't have to tell you all how simply amazing she was, being believers and all, but she shined in this live, intimate, round robin workshop performance. She harmonized, she played along, she laughed and connected with her fellow performers and the audience. Susan Werner can sing, can play and can write. MAN. I see now what Believer friends Dennis, Suzie T and Paul mean when they talk about her. I did buy one CD, Last of the Good Straight Girls. I bought it for one song, one she played that had the entire lawn held in silence and wonder...Some Other Town...it is the kind of song that makes me want to sing. God, she can write. My husband is in love...with me and with her. We played the CD on the drive home and held hands and kept looking at each other like we had this great secret between us. Pretty damn fine music. I don't know why I did not connect before...well, that is not the truth, I do know why. The set I heard her do as an opening act was mostly songs of broken relationships, heart ache and sadness and I just wondered, "Sheesh, how many guys has she"....well, you know. I will see her when she comes to town. I will tell others of her wonder. I will smile real big again because she mentioned that she is moving to Chicago and I live in Chicago and I host house concerts and one can dream....right, one can dream? Thank you to Suzie T for leaving her CDs with me, and then leaving me alone to find my way to the music myself. Not ready for a baptism into this group of believers, this Church of Susan Werner, just yet, but I am enjoying the words. Heard some other great music too this weekend, this festival is 25 years old and so good. You should make an effort to see her there if she comes around...well worth the trip. Unfortunately, I had a wedding to attend on Saturday, and I had to leave at around 5 on Sunday afternoon in order to get back home to Milwaukee at a decent hour. Therefore, I was only able to see Susan perform in the round robin workshop to which Bryn referred (but not actually "in concert"). I was able to meet another believer (Hi, Kellie!) and I was also able to share the "Susan experience" with my mother and stepfather. I'm overjoyed to hear that Susan is planning to move back to the Midwest! Although I spoke with her briefly, due to time limitations, we were unable to do much more than introduce each other to some of the friends and family that were with us, so I was unaware of her plans until I read Bryn's letter. The three marvelous artists with whom Susan performed in the round robin were Vance Gilbert, LJ Booth and Billy McLaughlin. Before I left LaCrosse, I spoke briefly with Billy. He was VERY impressed with Susan. He raved about her singing, songwriting and guitar-playing abilities. He wanted me to share with Susan his opinion that she is "the total package," but since I was leaving town, I was unable to do so. (Anyone volunteer to share this with her?)
