Like Meth, I'm not a big fan of schtick. I did find David somewhat entertaining as an opening act and that is, I think, a key point. I don't envy *anyone* having to open for Susan. That's gotta be a tough job, ya know. As a musician, I've tried to go thru the mental process of preparing for that daunting task, and I'm not sure that I would do other than David did, which is to find the 5 or 6 most in your face tunes he had and force the audience to comply with his agenda. I've seen a lot of acts, an amazingly large number of acts, fail as a Susan opener. Some of those acts are *stars* in the singer/songwriter pantheon. A brief cruise thru David's tour itnerary shows that he does a lot of corporate, motivational, and "cause" related work. Maybe he figured he was playing to a corporate crowd and dumbed down his set }8-> At any rate, I'm glad that meth, woj, and jeffw weren't forced to witness last years SW Concerts under the Stars appearance. The opener, who shall remain nameless but who obviously had friends in high places, managed to do a very long set without ever once singing an entire phrase in tune. Got her mother up to accompany her on a song which consisted of four chords AND NO DISCERNABLE MELODY. Sang a song for every member of her family (she has a large family, they were all there). She'll probably be playing Philly Folk Fest this year. She can precede the Bacon Brothers. Throughout this terrible performance of sub-mediocre drivel, my friends and I traded expressionless glances, forming lasting bonds that only those who truly suffer together can achieve. Then Susan finally came out, and said "Wasn't " wonderful?" There's probably a lesson in that, but I've been putting a roof on the porch all day, I'm really beat, so it escapes me right now. You can offer your own opinions, but that's where it ends. I love Susan's stuff. Call me sensitive (and I'd like to stay that way - thanks, jewel) but Ron, why are you being so condescending and insulting to all the people on the list who have different opinions from you (the so-called "sensitive" people)? I happen to *AGREE* with you that we should have different opinions and I also agree with Meredith that as long as it's not a "David Roth SUCKS!" statement, we should be able to accept and welcome a differing opinion. So why is it that you contradict yourself by stating that we should welcome differing opinions, and then rip on everybody who has disagreed with you? I'm sure you'll tell me that it's all in fun, and that like the rest of the people who have ever been insulted by anything even slightly politically incorrect, I'm being way too sensitive. Maybe even "offended" unintentionally. But I really don't see how condescending to the rest of the list helps your argument at all...even if I happen to be on your side on this one. - -Michelle (Patiently awaiting tomorrow's believers digest for your flame, er response...) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? If you don't, treat yourself to one of the best of the early singer/songwriters, as well as a monster guitar player. Steve was a funny, gentle, humble man, adored by the folk comunity. He blew my doors off many years ago on the campground at Philly Fest, and did it in such a way as to encourage, rather than discourage me from playing.. I was not intending to be condescending, and yes, I was having a little fun. The fact that this level of controversy, which I guage as minimal, can be seen as insulting, condescending, or offensive, is the very thing that drives me up the wall. > So why is it that you contradict yourself by stating that we should > welcome differing opinions, and then rip on everybody who has disagreed > with you? I really have no "argument." I merely stated the view that people should be able to say what they think without other people being offended. Now you think that I am ripping people and offending them which is precisely my point. I fully expect this post, which I see as discussion and clarification of views, to be seen as "fighting" or something that should not be tolerated on this list, and this makes me very sad. I'm going from memory here, but I'll do my best. It starts off as a novelty -- wow, we can talk about this great topic! Isn't this neat! Let's talk a lot about everything we can think of and meet new people. Then everyone gets to know each other and starts to settle in a little. The conversations get more personal, people start to meet each other offline, and it's like a big happy family. It's great, though, even if you don't meet the others elsewhere, you still feel part of something, and it feels good. Then, it can take two directions. If everyone has been supportive, the group can become more close-knit, probably meeting more often offline and getting to know each other even better. Then the list becomes mostly inside jokes, very insular, and very hard for newcomers to break into. The list continues, but doesn't get a lot of new subscribers. Or, one might start seeing small conflicts on the list, people start to get offended about things that probably wouldn't have offended before. They start having public flame wars and get off-topic. People get tired of watching the wars go on and leave. Newcomers subscribe, see the flame wars, and leave silently. Finally, the list dies because no one's left, except maybe the flamers, who don't need a mailing list to argue. The original topic is long gone. We've all seen this happen, so I hope we can learn from it. I love hearing about Susan's concerts and about the personal stuff you guys share, and I don't want to lose this list. I don't know if decline is inevitable, but if we're aware of it, maybe we can stop it in its tracks and get back to what we got on the list for... Sorry to preach, if that's how it sounds. I don't mean to. I just really want mommy and daddy to love each other again, you know? ;\ leslie - -- Leslie Dreyer Kalra Techies, Inc.
