Okay... I'm waaay behind here on my new mail account. I have some words to offer on this matter.........Meth - I want to start out by saying and insuring you this is in no way directed at you (although this example has bubbled the issue up so it may seem that way.. but it's not.. it's just being used as an example). I am fond of your writing (as I was very impressed with your article regarding the final show in the "Bull Run" series (and remember meeting you that night & Mosh & Woj & Pat & Gail & Kellie & Paul...) what a great night that was). I have found that this community is jampacked full of sensitive people, so it's quite easy to offend without ever intending to do so. One night, at a Susan Werner concert in Franklin MA, we were talking to a concertgoer about "the last time we were here". It was a double bill Christine Lavin show. We had gone to the 3:00 show (there was also a later 7:00 show). We did this so we could bring our kids to see our beloved Christine (they were 5 & 3 and never sat still....(different story)). At one point I mentioned that the room wasn't full (obviously because there were two shows and this was the early one) and he said "No wonder... It was Christine Lavin". I kinda laughed it off with a "now don't go there" kinda response but was definetly offended and haven't forgotten it. Another time, I was at my Virgin David Roth experience! I was alone on this particular occasion (my wife had to stay home with the kids as we had no available child-sitters that evening). But my good friend Suzie Tee sent me things in the mail saying "You got to go see David -He's coming to your area on this evening - He's wonderful". I was completly blown away that night, and became an avid David Fan. I now have two of his albums (he has 6 - got 4 more to get!) I just love the guy! Definetly won me over. His lyrics are so powerful. I can't sing enough of his praises. As a matter of fact... I can't even sing! :-) Anyway... the point. At this concert, I was chatting it up with my neighbors and was talking about my other favorite artists and when I brought Susan Werner up, one of the women said "Oh I don't like her". Just like that. Exactly like that. Abrupt.. "Oh I don't like her!". I said "You must be mistaken.. I'm talking about Susan Werner..." and truely thought she must have been thinking of someone else. I kept prodding her. Then she said. "No - I don't like her. I think she's much too cynical". I didn't talk to her for the rest of the night. I mean. I didn't treat her badly or look the other way when we made eye contact during particularly emotional portions of David's concert (although I was tempted to...) No. But I was definetly offended by her statements. And I didn't even know her, nor the Franklin man who slammed Christine, but it had that impact on me. Now Meth; you're somewhat of a legend on this list (I mean...you're a SMOE person - you're a meber of this group that brings us all these great mailing lists!!!) So you can imagine the weight your words carry. When Mosh said "he wasn't my style"... I was prepared to make a tape of what I feel are my favorite David Roth songs and hand it to him next time I saw him, and urge him to give it a good listen next time he's on a long drive, and get back to me. But then when you said what you said, albeit completly your right, I was definetly bummed out about it. So that's the whole point here... The Folk Community is a very sensitive bunch! It's not on either of the albums I have, but I remember it from the one concert of Dave's I've seen. The song "The Dream" is about the good hearted Hakeem Olajuwon and the exceptional statement he made to the Sports Apparell industry. As the song quotes of the Footwear industry seeking endorcements from big name athletes; "And the Company's come courting. They see dollar signs in every pair of inexpensive, highly marked up shoes that they'll be hocking. And they slap a famous name on footwear cheaply made in China. And they charge a hundred bucks a pair. The Athletes do the talking. Unfortunatly, the targets of these add campaigns are not the Rich an Wealthy well-to-do, with lots of cash, and extra savings. They're the kids of working folks, single parents, some on welfare, who now have the added pressure, of these shoes their kids are craving".... (and later in the song, when Hakeem is getting such an offer); "We want to put your nickname on our Sneaker line, Hakeem! We're proud that you're a winner, we can both make lots of Money. Every kid will want to have a pair. And we'll call your shoe 'The Dream'. 'You want to use my name for what? (is what Hakeem had snorted). 'A Shoe' they said 'A what?' 'A Shoe!' 'God Bless you' (he retorted). But Hakeem, a most religious man, reflected on their offer. And responded with a most resounding 'Yes - on on condition - That these Dreams you wish to sell, you price at less then Thirty Five Dollars - If you stick to that - You have my permission!". - -------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Oh - here's some other Dave Lyrics that stick with me (and maybe with others who have aging parents); An Aging Man, A younger one, and a woman in her Prime Connected by their Circumstance of Birth A Father, Son, and Daughter, somehow all obsessed to find The Mark that each will leave upon this earth. Alone in his apartment, in his favorite easy chair The Aging man endures his failing health. Nowadays, preoccupied, arranging his affairs And adding up the value of his wealth. He says a prayer and falls asleep, then somwhere in a dream He's searching for his children, and he's calling out to them "Will I leave enough behind to help you get along Please tell me how will I be counted when I'm gone?" It won't be by your worldly goods. It won't be by your gains. And not among possessions you bequeath. But wisdom, grace, and kindness, and the power of your love Will be the measure of the Legacy you leave. Oh Well.. 'nuff! Nite all! I have heard about Bryn's "On The Map" house concerts and hear they are nothing but outstanding! I have a good friend who will also be there (I have about 30 messages ahead of this one - perhaps she's already surfaced?) Nice to hear from you again. I take it you're back from overseas? MOSH drebin: "do you think you can beat the champ?" briggs: "i can take him blindfolded." drebin: "what if he's not blindfolded?" briggs: "well, i can still beat him!"
