To paraphrase a friend, to hold Susan's music as what everyone's musical goal should be is rather narrow-minded. I'm sure that if a new fan were to post an unfavorable, somewhat nasty review of one of Susan's concerts, he/she would be crucified on the spot. Except for Priscilla & Little Rickee (my favorite Chattanooga band, which does mostly covers but are still talented), everyone who plays before Susan at Riverbend each year generally sucks. (She's almost always last, because she's the biggest name for that evening.) One year, I remember a great female singer was on before Susan, but I'm not totally sure now who it was (I want to say Christine Lavin, but it could be that name rings a bell only because I've read it on this list a thousand and one times). Susan sounded great and won over many new fans (judging from the fact that all those people who told me earlier that they would wait to see what Susan sounded like before they bought a CD came back later and bought one :-) I hope you all had a much fun as I did :-) Peas, Courtney Somethingblack.com HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 5 Jul 2000 18:20:51 -0400 (EDT) From: owner-believers@smoe.org Subject: [none] [209.42.128.1]) by smoe.org (8.8.7/8.8.7/daemon-mode-jane) with ESMTP id KAA16003 for ; Wed, 5 Jul 2000 10:14:32 -0400 (EDT) Received: from hansolo (ts-3-12.chaknx.VoyagerOnline.net [209.42.171.141]) by earth.voyageronline.net (8.9.3/8.9.3) with SMTP id KAA20056 for ; Wed, 5 Jul 2000 10:14:29 -0400 (EDT) Message-ID: <002f01bfe68b$6170faa0$0601a8c0@hansolo> From: "Lee Gross" To: Subject: Opening acts in chattanooga Date: Wed, 5 Jul 2000 10:14:48 -0400 MIME-Version: 1.0 Content-Type: multipart/alternative; boundary="----=_NextPart_000_002C_01BFE669.D93A62A0" X-Priority: 3 X-MSMail-Priority: Normal X-Mailer: Microsoft Outlook Express 5.00.2615.200 X-MimeOLE: Produced By Microsoft MimeOLE V5.00.2615.200 Sender: owner-believers@smoe.org Precedence: bulk This is a multi-part message in MIME format. - ------=_NextPart_000_002C_01BFE669.D93A62A0 Content-Type: text/plain; charset="iso-8859-1" Content-Transfer-Encoding: quoted-printable Lee--any input? (I also would like _Time Between Trains_ a whole heluva lot better than I do.) I do, however, tend to notice the differences in style and level between artists, particularly when they are performing on the same stage. >I'm sure that if a new fan were to post >an unfavorable, somewhat nasty review of one of Susan's concerts, he/she >would be crucified on the spot. At least from my point of view, that would depend on the tone of the review. A simple "Susan Werner sucks!", with no attempt to explain why the writer feels that way would probably get my hackles up, sure. But if the reviewer could make their case for exactly why they feel that way, then I'd have to respect their opinion and perhaps recommend an artist they might find a bit more to their taste. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 05 Jul 2000 23:37:09 -0400 From: "David S. Kaskela" Subject: KofP 7/2 Hi All- Sorry that this post is so late, but life has gotten really busy... First on the subject of David Roth. David seemed to be very well recieved by the audience... and sold all the copies of his newest CD which he had brought. I know since I had asked my wife to buy us a copy. I will admit that his crafting of lyrics falls short of the level Susan brings to her writing. And I liked his subject matter better than his treatment. Especially his song The Dream about Hakeem Olajuwon and his song about Two Old Friends. Those may not be the titles but if you know David's work you'll know the songs I'm referring to. He was witty and funny and at times poignant and really seemed to connect with large segments of the audience. Now to Susan! As usual, when Susan is near home, she seemed relaxed, in touch with the audiene and just plain having fun!! Here's the set list- Do You Trip on Love Time Between Trains Shot Tower Shade of Grey* Petaluma Afternoon Blue Guitar Sorry About Jesus Jesus Christ, Ain't I Lonely Tonight Like Bonsai Dow Re Mi Tall Drink of Water (w/ Summertime intro) Light Sleeper** Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter I Don't Wanna Grow Up*** Misery/ Happiness Standing In My Own Way All of the Above, None of the Below Help Shade of Grey is brand new and a beautiful song. Light Sleeper was a rocking, almost honky-tonk, piano relationship number. And I Don't Wanna Grow Up, from Peter Pan, was just plain fun (she almost didn't play it, walking away from the piano, hesitating, half turning away, then coming back to play it.) I wish someone had taped this show since I would love to hear it again!! It was great to see so many Believers!! There are lots of musicians that I love, and many that Ii don't. but I try to understand that not everyone has the same requirements that I have for music, or art, or literature. Life would be incredibly boring. Truth be known, I have said to my closest friends that certain music "sucks". But I would never share those views with an entire list. Some people enjoy the discomfort they inflict with bold statements like that, others feel nothing at all. As a musician, it would kill me to hear someone say that about my performance or songwriting. I try to measure what I say. So I just don't buy CDs or pay to see people I don't appreciate. As much as I love Susan, the last performance I saw, there was way too much mugging - way over the top. Her songs are so good they speak for themselves, need no explanation, no acting. And I have seen her other nights where she was quiet and let the songs tell their stories. More effective for me. It is all so much a matter of personal preference. Be kind, you'll feel better.
