Kaskela" Subject: Re: SW 6/7 @ Haddon Heights I haven't posted anything about this show yet because I expected someone to post the set list first. Dave?.... Anyway, my 25th SW show was a typically fine show, and although Susan apologized at the beginning for being rusty (as it was her first show in two weeks), there were no difficulties. It was my first chance to hear such numbers as "Do You Trip On Love", "Shot Tower" (very powerful), "First World Woman", and "Tall Drink of Water" (which seems like a simple love song at first, but was surpisingly moving). Highlights included a funky cover of "Somebody's Knockin'" (the 1981 pop hit by Terri Gibbs) and a version of "Dow Re Mi" that really blew away the audience. A great crowd-pleaser... always fun to see that the audience just isn't expecting it. And as for the older material, it's good to see that "LOTGSG", probably the oldest song in her regular repertoire, still retains its power. The final song was a new one, just written that morning, whose lyrics she read off a piece of paper. Called (I think) "More Than Words Can Say," it was a lovely song about words-- nearly every line began with "Words can..." and she was able to talk in the verses about their power, but the chorus talked about how unpowerful they can be, ending with the words "I love you more than words can say." Simply constructed, but the result was very effective and lovely. Very nice show, in a nice setting-- a dell in a park with the audience sitting on benches on a hillside. The kids at play were a distraction, but Susan took their presence in stride, saying "Nice to see kids here... big impediment to a career, not attractive *at* all..." through gritted teeth! And her proposal of a new "white trash feng shui" got lots of laughs. All in all, a low-key but excellent show. Any other thoughts? - -Tim - -----Original Message----- From: David S. Kaskela" Subject: Re: SW 6/7 @ Haddon Heights (revisited) Hi all- Can't say if it's the heat, an almost overwelming work load ... but this is the first chance I've had to post since Wednesday (and yes Tim, you did make me feel just a little bit guilty). Susan Werner at the McLaughlin-Norcross Memorial Dell, Haddon Heights, NJ, 6/7/00. This was the first of the new summer series of free concerts presented by the Camden County Parks department. And so it wasn't really heavily promoted or attended. It will be! The Dell, named for two Camden County officers shot to death in the line of duty several years ago, is a beautiful little amphitheater (or is that amphitheatre "with an re, don't you just hate that, it's like the useless silent 'e' on Ye Old(e) Theatre" as Susan quipped) surrounded by shade trees with bench seating and "on the grass" spillover space. Upcoming shows include Jeffrey Gaines on June 26, Lucy Kaplansky July 5, Country and Blue Grass July 19, Newport Festival Texas Preview August 2, Bill Morrissey August 16 and Entrain August 30. But enough free promotion... Susan was wonderful. Need I say more?? ....OK, I will!! Since Tim put up such a nice review I won't duplicate his effort or comments, and I'll only make one small correction. Since I spoke briefly with her before the show, and again extensively after the show, I got to "talk songs" with her. Here's the set list ( twice, as I wrote it "a la Susan" and with the "real titles" Trip Do You Trip on Love TBT Time Between Trains LOTGSG Last of the Good Straight Girls Shot Shot Tower Vagabond Vagabond Mouth 1st First World Woman JC Jesus Christ, Ain't I Lonely Tonight Bonsai Like Bonsai Dow Dow Re Mi (Summer) Tall Tall Drink of Water w/ Summertime intro CP Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter Misery Misery/ Happiness Somebody's Knocking Somebody's Knocking Standing Standing In My Own Way Above All of the Above, None of the Below More Than Words Can Say Words "Words" is what Susan called the new song both on the set list for tuning purposes and in talking about it later. Yes, it was written that morning, and yes, she likes simple titles. My only complaint was that the keyboard saw use on only two songs. It was another fine show! Next Saturday is Bridgeton with John McEwen, Natalie MacMaster and Susan Werner!! Be still my beating heart. And "Dat's All' Folks!!"
