It was my first time to the venue and was surprised to learn that this is the 20th year that concerts have held at Roaring Brook. Susan was wearing dark jeans, a black short sleeve dress shirt, and black shoes. The performance space is a temporarily-converted nature display room; it is wide and shallow, with a tiny stage (about 9ft wide, 5ft deep); covered with a persian-type blue and cream colored rug. A central section of 4 rows of 6 folding chairs each is flanked by two side sections angled at 45 degrees; sightlines are excellent, and especially so from my first row center seat. The ceiling, made of naturally stained wood, slopes up radically behind the audience; it is barely standing height behind the performer, rising to about 20ft. behind the audience, with visible beam supports. It was as close to a house concert feel as I've ever seen while still being in a normal concert setting; the space has quite a bit of "room gain"; the ambiant guitar from the guitar bodies and her direct vocal were nearly as loud as the PA, which was barely audible; yet the sound was clear, bright and intelligible. The piano was an Alesis keyboard that Susan brought. Interestingly, there were rows of snake cages immediately behind Susan, although these were covered with tan cloth for the show. Just as Susan sat down at the piano after Dow Re Mi, Jane walked over from stage left and lifted up the cloth on one of the big snakes; Susan's reaction was priceless. The cage to the right (immediately behind stage center) contained a tarantula; and Susan noted during the show that a sign on it said 'Please do not feed the tarantula; it eats mice'. "Those of you with older homes probably haven't considered that before..." Susan seemed to be in an especially good mood, playing for an attentive audience that was nearly dead silent except for vigorous applause. Time Flies is a new song which I've never heard before and don't recall seeing on the list prior; it is my guess at a title, and is written in the "new old songs" style; my guess is that this could easily end up on the 'old songs project' album to come. Shot Tower had the new verse; Happiness had a couple of adjustments to it for clarity. Just after All of the Above, she tuned up for If Not For You, then decided to scrap it; she said the song was not fun enough, and we were going to have fun; then a lengthy yet completely efficient retune and running through the melody convinced her she was ready to sing it for us. It was great to see and chat with George and his wife Susan, his in-laws, and to meet another fellow Believer (a lurker who I will not 'out' on the list). Once again, I feel privileged to have attended another great SW show. until next time!
