Kaskela" Subject: Susan @ Ron Patel benefit Hi All- Just returned from the Ron Patel journalism scholarship benefit @ the Society Hill Playhouse. Ron passed away in January after battling cancer. Ron was the former weekend editor of the Inquirer and president of the Pen and Pencil Club in Philadelphia. The P&P is the club, and Ron was the guy resposible, for Susans first full-time musical venue back in '89. There she learned not just about performing, but also an awful lot about life. Starting as the pianist, and later as vocalist, she accompanied Gerald Benson, the well known bass player, entertaining Philadelphia's off duty hard drinking journalists. Tonight was a reunion of sorts! Most of the audience were either friends or colleagues of Ron's and Gerald Benson was there too. Gerald opened the show on stand up bass with Bob Jay on guitar. Gerald is a great bass player with a beautiful smooth voice, and Bob's guitar picking was fabulous. They played old standards for about 1/2 hour...Very smooth!! After a short break Susan took the stage.Opening on guitar she played Do You Trip On Love Time Between Trains Shot Tower (with a new bridge written to show some of the outside influences on Dannys life) Vagabond Mouth Sorry About Jesus Jesus Christ, Ain't I Lonely Tonight Misery/ Happiness Dow Re Mi After another short break Susan, having shed the black jeans and white blouse in favor of the long black New Years Eve dress, returned to the stage and sat down at the piano to play Tall Drink of Water No One Needs To Know Lets Do It Then things got really special as she invited Gerald and Bob back to the stage to do some of the old songs from the P&P days. They did absolutely wonderful versions of The Very Thought Of You The Surrey With The Fringe On The Top Bye Bye Blackbird and as an encore That Old Black Magic If you've never seen Susan playing with old friends its hard to imagine the incredible delight you see in her face and performance as she shifts effortlessly in and out of the lead (and sometimes the song) with her fellow performers. What a great way to honor Ron's memory and raise money for a memorial scholarship. Charlie Sweeney, our very own list owner, was Jane "du jour" (his words) filling in very capabley tuning and helping Susan as friend and roadie. And "Dat's All, Folks!"
