My husband just found out that Susan will be at the Riverbend Festival in Chattanooga (Tennessee) again this year. The website he was searching indicated that this will basically be her only venture into the southeast this year, so we feel really honored! If any of you Believers live in the South and don't know about Riverbend, let me know and I'll be glad to give you the details and dates in case you'd like to visit our Scenic City this summer... Vance opened the show and was warm and goofy as always. Gave all the latecomers hell while mumbling, "must be devout Susan Werner fans," and later, "don't you feel bad you missed that last song? I was soundin' good!" This was my first full Vance set...what a great energy on stage! He also spent a good amount of time talking about Unitarians...."What happens when you cross a unitarian and a jehovah's witness? You get somebody knockin' on your door and they have no idea why." Susan took the stage after a twenty minute intermission and opened with a newer tune. She seemed in great spirits and had the crowd mesmerized in moments. She added on Unitarians: "Unitarians have done a lot for folk music...a lot. I'd just like to say that the Jehovah's Witnesses have done nothing. And my homies at the Catholic church haven't done much either." Susan played a rousing set, much shorter than Vance's, sadly, and then after a few encores....Susan and Vance came out and sang a mini set of jazz standards...what a treat! "The Nearness of You" had Vance doing his Billie Holiday impersonation. Susan surprised us all by piping in with an extremely accurate Louie Armstrong harmony line, and later a horn line, all the while improvising a smokin' jazz guitar solo...then a duet of "In the Mood for Love", Susan crooning and playing straight to the audience while Vance hopped around her singing somewhat frantically and bringing us all to tears with laughter. The two of them then embraced, and left the stage, but of course were called back for an encore...it was obvious, when they returned to the stage , that neither of them had a clue on what they'd be singing....Susan stood center pulling at her hair, and seemed to be struck with an idea. She leapt to the mic and began singing a capella "I Only Have Eyes for You". Vance grinned and followed her...without warning, they both stepped in front of the mics, picked up the tempo, and sat on the edge of the stage, filling the Somerville with two rich, acoustic voices....Susan covered the lead vocal while Vance adlibbed a string bass solo, all the while pantomiming... It was interesting for me to see both of these performers in the Somerville, which is a good size venue...they had no problem "sizing it down". The evening was intimate and fun. Both Suze and Vance connected and gave excellent energy! Wow! Great stuff! Who else was there? What did ya'll think?
