A little personal philosophy to share: We are just wacky fans. Each of us, one of hundreds or thousands. Which is great and OK but... Can you imagine having hundreds or thousands of people, who you don't know, wanting to be close to you? Sure it could be a big ego booster but it could also be quite scary. And how do you tell who is OK and who you have to be weary of. And who is interested for the right reasons (whatever that is)? And who really knows you anyway? Some fans become a bit familiar and want to be recognized and acknowledged but you can't remember them all. And you still don't know how wacky they are and your not sure you want to encourage them too much. But you want to be nice to them just the same. Some of them are wacky enough to wear pins, some of them quite large, with your face on it, to show you their admiration for you. Hell, some are even wacky enough to spend too much of their time to make those pins. And they all want you to love them back as much as they love you. But you don't know them. And you don't have enough time to give to them what they give to you, even if you wanted to, even if you knew none of them were too wacky. Sure it is nice to come to work and have everyone cheer for you just for showing up (Cheryl Wheeler's take on her "job") but there is far more to it than what meets the eye. In my limited experience, Susan is just like she is on stage, and more, and less; just like the rest of us; talented in our own ways; various degrees of quirks that make us unique and human (and not belonging on pedestals or feeling comfortable when we put them there). If by chance, as in the rest of life, you happen upon or even manage upon an opportunity to make a relationship more than a casual acquaintance (or simply being a fan), be it with Susan or some other idolized human being, enjoy it and don't be too surprised that they turn out to be less than ideal (which of course they should be). Or like in the rest of life, the connection didn't happen, for what ever reason. The paths didn't cross at the right moment, in the right way, or at the right time. You and they are no more or less because of it. Try to put yourself in her shoes. In her real shoes, not her glass slippers. Then enjoy the show; it is always a good one. She joked that when she took the gig as opening act, she thought her agent said it was with Vince Gill! It wasn't until she and Vance both showed up at the venue that she realized the misunderstanding! Vance brought her on stage to sing with him for a song or two. I don't recall which songs, but it sounded great. I saw Susan last weekend, and will get to see Vance at the end of the month. You're right, Vance puts on a good show, too. What a voice!
