CGDGBD I've played both "Like Bonsai" and "Year of the Bad President" in this tuning...though, after the last time I saw Susan, when I was watching her hands, I think she might be using a variation of this on "Like Bonsai". She was striking the open strings, and I could've sworn I heard an A in the first chord somewhere. Anybody know for sure? Also, anyone have any ideas about the tuning for "Old Mistake"? I have always liked Cherades Court on Monte Python's Flying Circus (not Gillcup!) although they're not singing, they are entertaining! How bout the opening statements sung to the tune of "La Vie En Rose"? Here in New England about 10 years or so ago, there was a traffic cop that was getting national attention (in Providence) for performing a dance (more like march/drill) routine while directing traffic. I think I remember seeing him profiled on 60 minutes or 20/20 or something like that. I'd seen him live on a few occasions. No one thought he was crazy. Just entertaining. So I think singing lawyers should become a standard. I don't know whatever became of him... Maybe he twirled into the path of an oncoming vehicle? Cool. I didn't know that. I like them! Hey - I hear ya... I would have enjoyed acting or being a musician, but I was raised the same way. To go where the money is. Good thing y'know. I have no talent and couldn't have possibly made it as an actor or musician ;-) HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 22 Feb 2000 15:02:31 -0500 From: moira stone Subject: Re: Lawyers in Love (getting off-topic) Hey, all - I felt that I had to speak up on the lawyer/performer thread. As an actor/singer performing (if not getting paid) regularly in NYC, I must say I envy exactly one thing about the profession of law: the money. I lived with a larval lawyer for a year or so and felt his pain as he stifled his creativity, his curiosity and his spontenaity for the sake of passing his exams and pleasing the professors. I'm willing to cop to that fact that those systoms might have been due to the ivy league pressure-cooker he attended instead of the profession of law itself. From what I saw of his work at the firm he signed on with, though, the work he'll be doing in the next few years didn't exactly look stimulating. But here's the rub. He's financially well-off and stable. He's got security, benefits, and (eventually) a challenging case-load. He also has a path that is fairly clear-cut. Work hard, and you'll advance in the firm, make partner or perhaps go in-house at an interesting company. AND, his profession afford him an entre into many other interesting worlds like public policy, politics, teaching, etc. OK...so maybe I'm jealous of more than the money. :) I guess what I want to say is that the grass is always greener. Although I'm living my dream, I'm feeling the pain of choosing a life that is lacking in the security and certainty departments. It's funny, I look at Susan as a role model. Someone who has succeeded in that she has a measure of security. Her fan base is large and stable enough for her to tour most of the year, she is creating wonderful new art all the time, and she has evidently found a guy to have a relationship with (love down the street, anyone?). As a strugling performer, I admire her success and stability. Do those of you who are not performers admire her as one who has chucked it all and followed her dream, living a brave and unsecure life on the road? Just wondering. I start farther back: I admire creative artists, and see the "greener grass" even in having the choice to make! I'm not a creative person, and the performing life was never even a possibility for me. Don't get me wrong: I enjoy my chosen profession(s), and I'm happy to be a fan, following my favorite artists around to concerts at every possible opportunity. I don't *think* I'd trade my life for any of theirs...but yeah, I admire folks like Susan intensely. I wonder whether my lack of creativity is due to some life choices, as well as some inborn lack of talent, and I'm in awe of people who have the talent and made the other choices. And especially of those who have the courage to dedicate their lives to their art.
