Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter Let's Do It, Let's Fall In Love The Baby Boomer Song E1-Much At All Susan was the feature at the once a month "Midday Music Series" (free and open to the public, and preceded by an excellent $8 buffet) at this very arts-oriented church. The show ran about 55 minutes and was in the same venue, a very richly appointed "basement cafeteria", as the show on Monday night. I heard a number of people remark that they were returning from first seeing Susan on Monday, but for the most part it seemed to be a relatively older audience. Susan said she had not played the Cole Porter song "Let's Fall In Love" in about 10 years; somebody mentioned it at a gig a few weeks ago, went home and scrawled out the words and gave it a "first playing" today. And it sounded great, jazzy and improvised as only the Suze can do. What I would really like to hear is a recording of one of Susan's old Pen and Pencil gigs from the early 1990s. St. Mary's was heard again but this time on the standard guitar. She related: "That song actually was written after studying quite a bit of Nancy Griffith's writing, just very economical and very simple like that." I believe this is around the 7th anniversary of its writing, I've heard a show from the World Cafe from 2/23/93 where she talks about it being two weeks old. It still just tears my heart out every time I hear it; the emotion still communicates as strongly today as it did back then. Some notes on equipment: I inquired more about the Chris Jenkins parlor guitar, it does have a pickup installed but they are reworking the electronics to it. This venue had a very nice grand piano that seemed well-tuned; Susan remarked it was really a treat after playing a number of electronic keyboards at other places. "And the baptists across the street, they just have a little Casio. I would never think of playing a show over there..." she joked. One of the things many of us enjoy is how she sizes up the audience and the situation so perfectly and smoothly tailors the show to them, to the local geography, the local culture. I know this is preaching to the choir but after seeing so many shows these small diffrences really jump out at me. At these church gigs, preceded by a blessing over the meal, she left out the "...like a stallion" lines in the Dow song, spelled out a key word in the boomer song; and the dish and the spoon were just "in the clover" rather than having smoked any today. And it was basically trasparant, not losing that much, since the tunes are so well-constructed and complete in and of themselves; the "zingers" just adding that extra dose of hilarity but not -depending- on them like some musical genres. Next up: College Station and Austin. on a relaxing vacation made even better by 4 SW shows! Keith __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
