Kaskela" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Wed, 16 Feb 2000 16:50:18 EST From: PBCoustic@aol.com Subject: Feb 16th Lunchtime Show I went back for a "second helping", to Susan's lunchtime show on 2/16, bringing three other friends to the gig who had never heard/seen her before that couldn't make it Monday night. FUMC does a "Midday Music" series once a month, offering essentially a free concert to anyone working in the downtown area, with a wide range of performers from vocalists to fiddles to Japanese Taiko Drummers to Susan…(!) The show was in the same "ballroom" as the Monday night show, with fewer tables and somewhat less of a crowd (100?), being midday. I'd have to describe it as a somewhat older crowd, in general, and Susan's set was delivered somewhat lower-keyed and softer, accordingly. Similar to Monday, the meal was served and Susan started about 45 minutes later, a little after 12:00… although she didn't eat this time… (too early in the day for lunch for a night-owl performing type?) After taking the stage, she made some initial comments about this being "A morning show for me…" but didn't throw in a yawn… Le Setlist: (criminally short, due to the program ending close to 1:00) · Perigee · Bad President · Time Between Trains (with chat about Amtrak, and the song as "a transportation metaphor for other less noble pursuits") · St. Mary's of Regret · Dow Re Mi (Switching to piano, with chat about Methodists, Catholics, etc) · Why Do You Bother At All? (co-written with Shirley Ikard (sp?), who wrote "Let's Give 'Em Something To Talk About) · Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter · Let's Fall In Love (by Cole Porter, just being learned, and done on spur of the moment(?)) (Switching back) · Born a Little Late · Much At All (piano encore) Again, in line with the perceived "older" crowd, it was more piano based, and generally softer volume levels on everything… but still worked nicely… and things got cranked up somewhat on "Dow" and "Born a Little Late", as you might expect… and between songs, there was the humorous (good) banter about local geographic and political items of the day. In spite of the "early" hour, Susan still put herself totally into it, with all her great facial expressions and vocal emphases, and the obvious emotional feelings that the songs bring out… After the end of "Late", the enthusiastic applause (although not a S.O.) was sufficient to bring on an encore… "Much At All" was played with a lot of emotion, with an extra tag section at the end that was poignant, although I did not recognize the tune… beautifully done, though… ( I saw several others actually dabbing their eyes…) My three friends are new converts (of course!). I spoke with Susan afterwards for a bit - and while we were talking, Jane came by, fuming, with a piece of paper in her hand… Apparently, one of Dallas' Finest had written them A PARKING TICKET for parking in front of the church to load the gear!!!!! (I'll bet the church will cover it…) While we were talking, Susan noticed my pick pin ("Nice pin!"), and said she'd seen them in the Northeast, but not here... Among the fans who she chatted with, there was a girl of about 4(?) and a boy of 9 or so... he asked for a souveneir or something, and she asked Jane to get him a pack of strings and a pick... He was beaming... she might just have inspired the next superstar... Here comes Susan, Houston! Kaskela" Subject: Re: Feb 16th Lunchtime Show Thanks for the two nice reviews, Paul. It's nice to keep updated on what Susan's singing even if I can't be there to hear the shows. Lets Fall In Love is actually called Lets Do It and she goofed her way thru it 1/21/00 at Godfrey Daniels after including a little snip of it in Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter. At yhe time she said she should really learn it... The tag on melody at the end of Much At All was probably Walk Right Back. If you go back to early September in the archives you will find the words posted by Charlie. It was written by Sonny Curtis and recorded by the Everly Bros and she played it Sept. 5 '99 at The Concert Under the Stars as well as on other occassions. If you know the words it's even more poignant! Thanks again for the reviews!
