["Ron Rosen" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Tue, 15 Feb 2000 09:58:13 EST From: PBCoustic@aol.com Subject: Valentine's Day Show Ah, yes, another excellent evening with Susan... how does she keep up this level of performance night after night??? Amazing... once again, she was "on"... The Valentine's Day show was held in the basement dining room of a church built in the '20s, with about 140+(?) in attendance... Everyone was seated at round tables holding eight, and a chicken/rice/veggies dinner was served starting at 7:00. I had my teenaged son and daughter with me, as well as another friend new to Susan's music. During the early part of the dinner, Susan made the rounds of the room, greeting people she knew for a while, then sat down with Jane at a table close to where my kids and I were to actually eat before the show began... And I had the pleasure of meeting a fellow Dallas believer, Kellye... (she recognized me by my SW pin...) About midway through the meal, I took the opportunity to approach her to say hello, and to ask permission to take a few non-flash photos to send out for the website -- she said that it was fine, and "nonflash is very good..." So, I got a few shots I'll be sending out for posting... Her performance started a bit after 8:00, after a brief introduction by the pastor as to the circumstances of how the evening had been arranged -- he had seen her play for the first time last year, and was smitten... She came out, and after some initial banter, started into a 90-minute nonstop set, with various socio-political commentary along the way... backgrounds of songs, humor about Texas vs. everywhere else (and within Texas), and just great overall stage presence... The Set List: * Perigee (with minor commentary about "illegal drug references" [smoking clover] and "disavowing any knowledge of things or people like that") * Petaluma Afternoons * Got To See The Body * Year of the Bad President * Time Between Trains (with an introduction about "married vs. single", "the Great Philosopher Oprah", and "When you're married, you know who you'll sleep with next, you just don't know when...") * St. Mary's of Regret ("The last of the first set of love songs for tonight" Played on a guitar built and given to her by a Dallas-area friend - -- good sound, nice looking guitar!) * 1st World Woman (A new song, written last week(?) about a woman working the Avis counter in Seattle) * Dow Re Mi (Incredible... just incredible... I'm speechless... Has anyone sent a copy of this to Julie Andrews???) * Bonsai * Society Ball .....Switching to the piano, she then played: * Tall Drink of Water (Another new one, written during the Kerrville Cruise... including commentary about how "AquaFina water is bottled in basements down in Houston, isn't it?"... comparisons between Iowa State and Texas A&M / engineering vs. liberal arts... and "The cruise was very warm, and when you're warm, you get ideas about things.....") * Cole Porter (with a preview of her upcoming "cat fight" competition with Diana Krall... doing new/old standards) * Movie of My Life (more political commentary, regretting The Donald's withdrawal from the Presidential race and Steve Forbes going back to doing Dodge commercials , and an inspired, intentional, horrendously off-tune section near the end after "everyone will see my mediocrity..") ....and back to the guitar, for: * Misery/Happiness (another married/single comparison) * Standing In My Own Way (with commentary about Episcopals vs. Methodists vs. Baptists, etc., and how "being nice can be both a blessing... and a curse...") .... and two encore songs -- various people (including myself) shouted out requests, which she deflected by saying "Good choice, good choice... that's a good one... all good songs, and by a 1st rate songwriter!" Then someone shouted "Old Mistake"... she replied "Oh, depressing choice..." * Born a Little Late (with Grammy commentary) * If Not For You (just learned recently -- a cover?) They brought her back out, and presented her with a dozen roses, which she said must have been pre-arranged, because she had been in a flower shop that day at 5:00 and there WERE no roses to be had... being Valentine's Day, and all... She greeted fans after the show, in front of the stage, doing the usual signings... introduced them to Susan -- they were in awe, after seeing her for this first time. My "NIN&MManson"-loving son even had a brief conversation with her about NIN and Trent Reznor... he couldn't believe it... Then she signed the poster I had (Thanks, Jake!), and posed for a picture with us... Very cool, overall... and I even got a picture of Jane, doing her thing after the show... ("one of the few pictures of me smiling," she says...) So, as soon as I figure out how to download the stuff off this new camera, I'll get it sent out... I know it's "preaching to the choir," but don't miss her when she's near you!!! Simply amazing... Present in the audience was Chris Jenkins, who built one of Susan's guitars for her. He is from Mansfield, TX and brought along the rest of the "Mansfield contingent". Dinner was served beforehand, and I was told by one of the waitstaff that the show would last "between 45 to 60 minutes depending on the crowd reaction." I thought to myself, "well, you look skeptical but you'll be in for a real surprise..." Susan blew the crowd of mostly-first-time listeners away, received a standing ovation and played for 95 minutes. We were treated to two new songs (one cover learned today) and one especially golden oldie: The Perigee Petaluma Afternoons See the Body Year of the Bad President Time Between Trains St. Mary's of Regret ** First World Woman* The Dow Song Like Bonsai Society Ball (Just the Band) Tall Drink of Water (On a Long Hot Day)* Much At All Movie of My Life Happiness Standing In My Own Way E1-The Baby Boomer Song If Not For You (cover) *written in the last week **played on the C. Jenkins parlor guitar The cover of "If not For You" was just learned today. Tall Drink of Water is performed on piano and I would say it is in the "new old standards" tradition, and was inspired by the folk cruise that she was on recently. Titling is my best guess, I didn't remember to ask about it. First World Woman was written dealing with the story of a particular Avis car-rental clerk in Seattle and, as has been posted here before, is pretty chilling yet matter of fact and even-handed. I was sooo thrilled to hear St. Mary's again!!! The last time I heard it live in a full length show was the last show (4/11/99B) at Club Passim and that was by my request...though she did it at the New Bedford (MA) Summerfest workshop held in the Whaling museum on 7/3/99, with Cliff Eberhardt. (Someone please correct me if it was done elsewhere up until now). Being a recording engineering-hobbiest type much more than a musician, I am almost completely clueless about the intricacies of guitar building but I will try to describe anyway. Susan described it as a "parlor guitar"; the body was smaller and more rounded on the bottom edge, it was very light in color and produced a markedly different timbre; more mid-range-y, less deeply resonant than her normal guitars. A lot of finger-squeak was evident; I'm not sure of whether this was a characteristic of the guitar or whether it was being acoustically miked rather than being fed via electrical pickup. I was invited to go take look at it and was so impressed with the build quality and tone that I forgot to look for a pickup. The inscription inside said "Saddle Pal # (deleted) built for Susan Werner Spring 1999 by C. Jenkins". Hopefully I will check it out further on Wed. at noon when she does a lunch gig at the same church. More to come... greetings from warm and sunny Dallas-- Keith (posting from my Yahoo account, likely won’t check my netway account until 2/20) __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
