Lowe" ] ---------------------------------------------------------------------- Date: Sun, 6 Feb 2000 20:19:38 -0600 From: "Charisse D. Lowe" Subject: Susan at Old Settlers Inn Just returned from the tiny Kansas town of Moundridge where I got my only fix of Susan for the year. She played a sold-out 100 seat room to people who really did not know her. I think I may have been the only one in the place who had seen her before. People buy seasons tickets for this little jewel of a place, and come out to all of the shows because Miner Seymour the owner doesn't book anyone not worth seeing! Instruments: Martin and Lowden guitars (Jane says it's too much of a hassle bringing the Parker since Suze only uses it on one song. The Lowden sounded great - I don't think she had it the last time I saw her, 11/98. Electric keyboards, think it was a Korg Set List: First 1. Perigee (first time I've heard this one) 2. Petaluma 3. Got To See The Body (Especially endearing having been divorced and left for someone else since the last time I saw Susan) 4. Bad President 5. TBT 6. Sorry About Jesus 7. First World Woman (?) She wrote this song last week, and it is chilling. 8. Do-Re-Mi 2nd Set 1. Vagabond Mouth (first time I've heard this) 2. Bonsai 3. Band at The Society Ball 4. No One Needs to Know 5. Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter 6. Movie of My Life 7. Still Believe 8. Misery/Happiness, Call Me When You Want to Come Back Home, new? 9. Standing In My Own Way Encore: Born A little Late, Boomer Song Well, she blew the crowd away as I knew she would. She was very up, had two very good nights playing in Manhattan and Lawrence, Kansas. She relates to this part of the country well. Sorry About Jesus always does a number on the crowd. I watch them instead of Susan. Everyone laughs at the first few lines, then it goes completely silent as the audience picks up on the pain in this song. Susan in complete control, masterful. When she did the 3 numbers on the piano (Needs to Know, Cole Porter, and Movie), she prefaced with the fact that someday she would like to do a project of all torch songs. Not standards, but songs she's written that sound like standards from the 30s and 40s. She updated Petaluma with "Ricky Martin" on the radio. So much stage presence. And those faces. Ms. Grimace! Spoke with her briefly after the show - she is such a nice woman, Jane, too. Told her not to take her yearly visit to Kansas off the tour schedule! Bye for now, got to hang a poster......
