What's the list for, after all? I only get to see Susan when she comes to Godfrey's, so this will have to be my fix for quite a while. But what a fix! She was so "on" she could have run all the sound and lighting equipment on pure energy. It was no doubt enhanced by the beer she started out with (Corona, which she described as rat piss), and the wine she ended up with (someone generously offered her some after the rat piss comment). She doesn't usually drink during concerts, but her impending departure for sunshine (the folk cruise) had her walking on the wild side. I heard all the songs I had heard so much about here (Vagabond Mouth, Dow Re Mi, Perigee -- well, Dave already posted the set list). I also got to talk to (babble at?) Susan a couple of times, both before and after the show, and I introduced myself to Jane, who asked me to tell everybody that they both say hi, especially to meth, woj and Jeff Wasilko. Pathetic little groupie that I am, I picked up Susan's set list (which had very little relation to what she actually played, at least at the second show) and bought a shirt. I already have several copies of each CD, and I felt it my duty to contribute to the Susan Werner cause by buying a shirt. Sam Mustafa was a great opener -- he has a similar dry wit that made him a good warm-up. I would imagine that Susan is a hard act to open for, and he did a terrific job. I'm glad he's a local, so I may get to hear him again, if I'm let out for more adult activities...:) - -- Leslie Dreyer Kalra Techies, Inc. Not looking for sympathy and I do appreciate the patience of those who are still waiting for your individually handmade for $2 (including materials, shipping and handling) believers pins. (For the newbies, we are not taking any orders at this time.) As most of you understand, demand often exceeds the supply of all that is needed to meet those demands. Life often takes unexpected turns. Kids are a higher priority. My whole family is. There other more important volunteer activities. Holidays with the family. Dancing Brook Design's real business demands attention. As I think it should be, all are more important to me so I'll keep plugging away as I find some time. It sounds like most of you are enjoying the shows. That and hearing your reviews gives me a great deal of pleasure and I look forward to a my next fix. Bearded One. Yes, you offered me a refund and I told you nicely that I would really rather have a pin. I fully believe you would follow through at that point. After that, in a message to the list, you made an oblique and ambiguous reference to me where it wasn't clear whether you were going to send me a pin or were going to blow me off because I'd even brought it up. I was really hoping to get a pin by Susan's LA shows next month, and I nicely requested that from you on a few occasions, but you haven't responded to my private messages. Before going public with my recent comments, I sent you a message to which you did not respond. >And I'll try to repress that bone-headed stubborn yankee side of me so I can >figure out if the squeaky wheel should get oil or if maybe it's not a wheel that's squeaking. You sir, have a lot of chutzpah, which, for you stubborn Yankees, is nerve. You volunteered to do something nice for the list. Then you dropped the ball and disappeared. Then when you get a few public needles, fully deserved, you finally come out with a defense about your family priorities and other obligations. All that is fine, but you could have kept us informed. You made the committment to the others, whether and how you want to fulfill it is up to you. As far as what I think of your hints that you are going to single me out, by denying me a pin, because I have spoken out on this, I won't even comment. As far as I'm concerned you still owe me a pin. >If it makes any feel better, I feel too guilty to take the time to go see Susan though she's >been within spitting distance several times since I took on this task. It doesn't make me feel better, although it's fully understandable. You, not I, nor anyone else on this list created this situation for you. A lot of people have been long awaiting pins, at least in time for Susan shows in their area. I never thought I wouldn't receive one by February 20. You can fix all this, there's still time. But don't single me out as the target for a situation that is clearly of your own making. That says more about you than me. Ron (1st Nashville fan who lives in LA). When I arrived she was sitting at a small table in the lobby doing peoples' nails with sparklies. I introduced myself and told her that I'd never seen her or heard her songs, but that I'd heard about her on this list. She said, "Susan sure takes no prisoners when she sings!" and asked me to say hello to Susan because I would probably be seeing her first. Ritt Henn opened the show. He is a bassist who writes humorous songs and accompanies himself just on bass. He also happens to be the bassist with Susan's Room, a group that was recently mentioned on the list. Ritt did only 4 or 5 songs, but it was a good appetizer for Christine. Christing was great. Her songs are so funny, and occasionally she did some nice serious ones. With all of the little things she does, including manicures, she is on the edges of being a performance artist. Here are just a few of the highlights I remember. She opened with a song about a puppy dying on a subway track (I won't give it away). A song about "What Was I Thinking?" and another about people on dates with nothing in common. She did some 'play/movie in songs': one about a couple who met in a large building, another about a woman having the worst day of her life, and another about a movie her aunt Patti was in about Pirranha Women of the Amazon. She also strapped a spotlight to her forehead and came into the audience and crowned a Mr. America. As her encore she did a baton twirling act, and brought an entourage of male audience members to the stage to sing about sensitve guys. The serious songs she did I really liked. One called The Sixth Floor about the assasination of JFK, which apparently she's updated with a second part about JFK, Jr. She also did a moving song by Amanda McBroom about Amanda's actor father who played fourth or fifth fiddle to Errol Flynn in movies. Christine explained that she changed the song from the first person with Amanda's permission. I think that the song might have even been more effective if she'd left it in the first person and just explained that Amanda wrote it for her father. It was a fun show. She's a great songwriter and performer. Special to Susie T. and Steve Murphy: I went up to four (4) cute curly headed redheads at the show, and none of them was Pamela. Then I started wondering, did they really mean red? Or brown with red highlights? Or blonde with a hint of red? Or, wavy, not curly? Anyway, I tried real hard, but did not find her. So the first step would be to call the venue as soon as possible and ask about their policy. 2)the performer-most performers hate flash photography during a performance, most could care less if you are using fast film and no flash. In this case, Jane the wonder roadie would be the person to ask. If you let me know what venue, I will ask her specifically, but I will ask her generally for the group, so that info will be available for all. FYI, there have been some great photo's taken which are available thru the webpage, and I have never seen Susan turn down a request for a photo after a show, although I guess some circumstance might occasionally interfere with that. Also, I have seen Susan request that photos be taken *now* and then do a bunch of poses so the audience has a chance to snap her, and still not interfere with the perfomance. And I have been dragooned into being the photog on numerous occasions when a fan needs a picture with the whole fam and Susan. Thanks for the great review! Can I post it on the Christine Lavin discussion board? As a lot of you know - I am a Major Lavinite! I love the woman and have everything she has ever done (and that's quite a lot as she's been in the field since 1981). I can't tell you how much her and her music means to me and Karen. And I won't bother here. Christine thought I should venture out and introduced me to Susan's music when she released "Time Between Trains". Like someone said earlier this week about frequenting Susan's Concert, she thought I should "cut down" (I can't remember who but I think it was Dave). Anyway - that said. I'm glad you enjoyed the concert. Oh - by the way. The read headded Pamela you were looking for (actually - she's more of a brown with reddish highlights and more "wavy" than "curly") probably could have been found hanging around Christine through the night. They go waaaaaaay back. They've been friends for 10 years! Too bad you didn't meet up. She's a real sweetie. Her and I and Suzie Tee chat excessively (but it's a GOOD excessively). Ron - please let me know if I can or Can't post your "Virgin Christine Lavin Experience on her discussion board at http://www.christinelavin.com. And - If you liked her Serious stuff - might I suggest her 1990 offering "Attainable Love". It has mostly serious stuff on it and it's beautiful. It has two funny songs. The song about the woman having the worse day of her life (the Shopping Cart of Love - the Play) and probably one of her best songs ever... "Fly on A Plane" (all about the dreams and asperations of a common housefly that got stranded on a flight from Houston to San Antonio). I too love her Serious songs even more than the funny ones. She's gifted and I'm glad you saw her and liked her! Take care, Steve p.s. Hey - are you sure that was a puppy on those tracks? (oh - I gotta be careful - that might be boarderline giving it away). p.s. one more thing - The "Pirhana Women" song was named after a movie her Aunt was in. It starred Bill Maher and was called "Pirhana Women of the Avacado Jungle of Death". It's a VERY funny song - AND - A singalong! But it has nothing at all to do with the plot of the movie - as she has never seen it. <<>> - -----Original Message----- From: Ron Rosen [mailto:ronsopas@earthlink.net] Sent: Sunday, January 23, 2000 1:06 PM To: Believers@smoe.org Subject: Christine Lavin at Northridge I saw Christine Lavin at Northridge (LA) last night.
