Here is today's quiz: The lineup for Saturday night's World Folk Music Association annual benefit concert included Mack Bailey; Steve Gillette and Cindy Mangsen; Red Grammer; Herdman, Hills and Mangsen; Carolyn Hester; The Limeliters; Odetta; The Joel Rafael Band; Side by Side; Susan Werner; and Jack Williams. Guess which was the ONLY one to receive ROARING applause after completing her five-song set? You got it. Another boffo performance before a crowd of 500+ folk music aficionados at the Birchmere in Alexandria VA. Her decision to include Born a Little Late just had to be inspired by her following Odetta on stage. What a great contrast: first Odetta, then Susan! If I recall As far as I'm concerned, you're indebted to me eternally! Susan's probably called me things that I can't remember right now, most likely variants on "that [insert derogatory adjective here] Australian". However, what sticks with me most is Jane's reaction when Charlie Sweeney introduced us at Falcon Ridge last year ("F*ckin' A, you really exist!")... :) sherlyn =-= Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@fl.net.au =-=-=-=-=-=-= [Sydney, Australia] "It has to start somewhere, it has to start sometime. IMHO!!! Hey from Lurksville (uh... no rhyming, please ;-} ) Anyone out there on "believers" know about Susan Streitwieser?? She and her husband Tom Manche (plus a couple other musicians I think) comprise the group "Susans Room". They've put out 4 cd's: Susan's Room (released in 1993) Lion in the Living Room (released in 1996) Thicker (released in 1999) Thinner (released in 1999) (Thicker & Thinner came about from having so many songs ready at one time, they decided to record one with beat-driven songs & thicker production, & the other-- stripped down acoustic lots of piano "Thinner". I feel *very* lucky they did both!!) I first came across her self-titled debut in a used cd store, & was very glad indeed to have found her (well-- found THEM!) !! She has a wonderful voice -- full & strong & hip ;-} (hey, I never won no vocabulary bee...) & I was going to add "deep", but she has a great vocal range so that could be misleading). But what reminded me of Susan Werner was Susan S.'s wit!! What a FAB writer!! I eventually tracked her down & we exchange email now & then. I keep hoping she will tour close enough to Texas to come to Austin, but she stays real busy on the west coast (lucky fish!!). Susan teaches voice lessons too -- and I would be on that waiting list if I lived close enough!! I see from her website that in Nov. she played at Berkeley. ENVY envy green with envy. And now she's "hunkered down" for a while in a winter writing zone. Here are a couple websites I found of theirs: http://lama.com/susansroom/index.html http://www.songwriter.com/susan/ If anyone out there gets to see them live, please email me & tell me about it!! Each of their (I always want to say "Her" but I guess that's not fair to Tom!!) CD's has several gems that keep me coming back. Here are my fav's: Susan's Room: Something out of Nothing When I Have Time to Fall Apart Lion in the Living Room: Title Song --refers to the "secret" ongoing disaster playing out in an alcoholic family ... similar to the "pink elephant" concept The Guy Downstairs -- witty funny song of living in an apt. with an annoying guy downstairs that brings out the mischief in her Decision -- driving just driving trying to come to some decision about the guy back home waiting for her to turn around Thicker: Perry Mason --- oh my... she's real!! She shares that obsession came first-hand via the little black box that makes crazy safe. When I was young I had a crush on Perry, too... so this was a delicious surprise song! Just This One Thing --- bargaining with God to keep this guy in her life... sigh... Foster Home --- experience with "temporary comfort" in a string of foster homes has a lasting effect on expectations of a relationship ever lasting... Trouble Now --- a roaring ride with sweet vengence on a "player" who "played" you too!! You go, girl! ;-} This song is absolutely a radio hit oughta-be!! I Get the Picture --- trying to handle the "dismissal" from a guy you love Thinner: Thank You Mom -- a painful song from daughter to her emotionally ill mother, describing some sad routines mixed with a few rollercoaster highs in their shared years before the mother killed herself Battle of Threes -- a song to the loser of the love triangle musical chairs game (you know... only 2 can win a place in a "couple"). Boy this is *sooo* full a story in so few words... a heart- breaking picture of a common roadkill experience in the love game ...yikes!! ;-} "In the battle of threes... someone chooses ... Someone makes out ... the last one loses" Phone Call to Alice --- crying to friend Alice about losing your boyfriend because you were running around He Won't Let My Love Sink In --- a lover's need to be perfect & suc- cessful brings doubts that she will still love him... Artfully descriptive; Takes place in her mind, sitting in a Roman piazza while he tries to write another few pages back in their hotel room. Her record co. is "Zanna Discs" in LA.
