Darryl Purpose opened the show...and I will leave it to others to relate what happened during his set (lets just say there was more of that Folk Alliance magic on display!). Susan seemed especially grateful that everyone was there. It was loose and laid-back, and we got to hear old favorites. Jane was in Philadelphia so Susan switched and tuned her own guitars. She talked politics freely, at one point joking she would head up the league of women voters. The Cole Porter song was dedicated to Ron Patel (sp?) who passed away recently. Ron was the owner of the Pen and Pencil Club in Philadelphia. Susan related wonderful stories of her start there. The classic So Heavy had an explicit but very classy extra stanza added relating to the need to enjoy the time while we have it. Even Gypsy Lips had a new twist, one of the "I want you to have a good time" lines was sung with no guitar underpinning. Middle way through her set, Susan invited the young Providence-based Erin McKeown to the stage to perform a song. Susan said, "In my travels, there's lots of really good, and then there's really *really* good. I just think you ought to hear this girl and put her on your radar." Erin is currently living in Amherst while recording her second CD there, and just happened to be at the show tonight. For those of you in the Boston area, Erin is playing her first "headlining" show at Club Passim this Thursday, 1/13/00. I definately recommend you check her out. I'll step out of the way and let some other Believers add commentary. It was great to meet everybody after the show, I've seen many of your names on this list and finally got to connect names with faces. Hopefully I'll be seeing more of you guys and gals around! I'm coming out of my usual lurker-hood to let you know that = Susan performed a wonderful set for the students of the Purnell School = in Pottersville, NJ last night. The school is a private boarding = institution with 100 female students with emotional difficulties. I was = invited to attend by my friend Christie whose sister Leslie, a teacher = at the school, had organized the event. After a lovely introduction by Leslie, Susan took the stage to perform = for about an hour and a half, stopping about halfway through to answer = questions. Though I don't remember an exact setlist, she included "The = Stock Market Song," "Ain't I Lonely Tonight," "Standing in My Own Way," = "Sorry About Jesus," "Petaluma Afternoon," "The Movie of My Life," = "Society Ball Band," and a brand-new one about another artist (who went = unnamed) that had as its hook "I don't think you'll ever join the human = race / but keep our number just in case." Altogether a lovely evening, and rather successful . . . numerous = students told Leslie afterward that they were exceedingly glad that they = had come. Susan was gracious as always, taking time to talk with = students afterward and ooh and ahh over Leslie's 9-month-old daughter = Mari. She even went so far as to sing a few Beach Boys tunes for the = kid and to preview a new song for us about babies. Hopefully Susan's performance at the George School will be equally as = successful :). - --Kate HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2000 14:17:51 -0500 From: "Courtney" Subject: Re: football movie Hi, I checked with Susan.....Yes, that's her and she has not/will not record the song elsewhere so that's the only way to hear it.....She didn't say if the movie was any good or not. :-) Courtney Somethingblack.com I still need the beauty of words sung and spoken and I live with the fear that my spirit will be broken......... A have a friend from the LA area who has a newspaper clipping from soon after they moved. It's a picture of an Anaheim sports bat with a sign out front: "Today's Special: Lack of Ram" Always struck me funny, anyway. -Terry ______________________________________________________ Get Your Private, Free Email at http://www.hotmail.com HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 9 Jan 2000 14:20:09 -0800 From: "Ron Rosen" Subject: Fw: football movie (correction) >when we last left our heroes, Ron Rosen exclaimed: > >>I meant "Pajamas of Jaguars and Rams." Of course I know the Rams aren't and expansion team. They were one of the original NFL teams, the Cleveland Rams. My correction had to do with the fact that I had confused the Panthers and the Jaguars, both expansion teams. My intent was to mention two teams who had a legitimate shot at the Superbowl, (i.e. Jacksonville and St. Louis). The Carolina Panthers did not even make the playoffs.
