Ok! Well I've gotten some sleep, and several requests, on list and off...so here's the long and the short of it. Susan started the show in black jeans, blouse and black low heel "schoolgirl" shoes. Part way thru, right before "the piano portion of the show", she asked if she should continue dressed as is, or change to "the dress". Getting back a mixed response she asked if we "wanted to see the dress?" She then came out carrying a long black dress and medium heels. The verdict was a resounding "The dress...the dress". With a quip about not being Diana Ross, with a band to carry the show during costume changes, she then started to unzip on stage. But when the cameras came out, something she quickly mentioned, she left the stage for about 30 seconds coming back in the heels and still getting zipped into the dress. During "Cole Porter" she slipped a heel off and held it up with a shake of her head as she sang "Maybe if my heels were higher..." And the dress it was for the rest of the show! And yes, she did play guitar and dance while wearing it. Waiting for pictures back of Susan on stage and with 'yours truly' after the show. Will ask Charlie to post if anyone wants to see. Happy 2000, everyone! Were there really so few believers at the New Year's Eve shows? Considering the price I guess I'm not all that surprised, but still. I was there for both shows (yes, I am fully aware that I am indeed insane), and they were both worth every penny. Alas I didn't make set list notes, but I do know that with the exception of the new songs, the early show had very little overlap from the late show. Songs I remember from the early show include "Like Bonsai", "Year Of the Bad President", "Movie Of My Life", "Standing In My Own Way", "Society Ball", "Ain't I Lonely Tonight", and "Petaluma Afternoons". Other notes: the stage was adorned with three clocks, one of which was set to GMT (labeled "Iceland"), another on Eastern time (labeled "Philly"), and the third was on Pacific time (labeled "Fresno" - interestingly enough, not Petaluma :). There was also a mirrorball, which was turned on at midnight to add an even more festive tone to the proceedings. >Now on to the show. Started late at 11:50 with Jill Sobule. Susan joined >her for the countdown and they did The End of the World and I Will Survive >as duets. Don't forget "1999", on which Susan played that mouth-blown keyboard thing (what is that called, anyway???) and sang backup, sometimes simultaneously. Jill was playing an Omnitron keyboard she'd gotten off off e-bay, which provided a really cheezy beat and even drum fills when required. It was hilarious. They also did a bit of "Sunrise, Sunset", not sure why. During the early show Jill did "1999" on her own, then Susan joined her for the encores which consisted of the REM song and "I Will Survive". That was a good rehearsal for the midnight renditions. > The Peragee (aka Look at the Moon) It's actually spelled "Perigee", and it's a wonderful song. I had a really memorable experience involving the amazing Solstice full moon myself, so I was really digging this song. Re the costume change, before she show I'd seen Susan when I was in line for the bathroom, and she asked if I thought she should do the change onstage. I told her it would definitely get her some exposure. ;) I couldn't believe it when she actually started to do it! What a loon. (Interesting trivia note: the woman who jumped onstage to zip her up was local musician Jen Hess, who I'd seen opening for Happy Rhodes at the Tin Angel a few years back...) And while we're discussing costume changes, until midnight passed Jane was resplendent in a shimmering black/purple ball gown (and boots :). I didn't recognize her when I first saw her downstairs! She looked great. By the time Susan's late set came around she was back in her t-shirt and jeans roadie gear, but I can't blame her. I was screaming for my comfy jeans by that time myself. :) For the record, Jill Sobule was also really great both times. She's got a new album coming out in March or April, and the songs she played from it were very good. She's always an amusing performer, and I thought she complemented Susan well. Like Susan, she's got some fall-down funny songs, but she can also be achingly poignant. All in all, it was a great way to ring in the new year/century/millenium. The things we do for marital bliss!! Ha ha!! I'm glad you mentioned Jane's spaghetti strap evening gown. I had gone outside for a cigarette between the entree and dessert, standing next to Susan watching the people partying in the streets, when a truly stunning woman in a beautiful gown asked if I had an extra smoke. I looked once, then again thinking "I know this person", then again before I realized it was Jane. Wow!! But I didn't dare mention it, since I thought no one would believe me. If it had been (aka Look At The (Faraway) Moon) I could have spelled Apogee correctly, but at 4a.m. Perigee was my undoing. Thanks!
