Please note you need to reply to as stated in the attached letter and *not* to the believers list, or to me directly. FYI, I am subscribing to the mailing list refered to in the below letter, so if you decide later you want to sign up, that would be the time to mail me. ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Dear Fellow Indie Musician, A number of us have gotten together out of a concern that we lack the strong, unified voice that we as independent artists should have in the music industry. The Internet has given us increased visibility and presence. We have unprecedented opportunities to distribute our music worldwide. But the Internet has also provided new ways for large companies to take advantage of cash-poor and cloutless independent artists. By offering downloads of our music, we enrich companies like MP3.COM, and we believe that those companies should in turn make royalty payments to us. But most do not. Thus, we have resolved 1) to put pressure on the free-download sites to provide royalty payments for all music downloads, 2) to pressure our PROs (BMI, ASCAP, SESAC) to persist in their efforts on our behalf with respect to downloads and, equally important, to involve us in and keep us informed of the progress of any negotiations they are having with companies that offer music downloads, and 3) to form a coalition called the Society of Independent Musical Artists (SIMA) in order to speak with one voice on this and other topics of concern to indies. The advent of the digital age has sent the music industry into confusion. We don't know what kind of system will eventually emerge, but we do know that if we aren't prepared to take a stand and get involved on issues like this, then decisions will continue to be made by big faceless companies without our participation just as they were before the Internet, and we will have missed our opportunity to take a measure of control of the industry in which we work. I'd like to invite you to subscribe to the SIMA mailing list. You can subscribe by sending an email to simamembers-subscribe@onelist.com or by going to http://onelist.com/subscribe/simamembers. Please note that it's just a discussion list, and subscribing to it doesn't commit you to anything. We do intend to make a public statement shortly announcing the formation and goals of SIMA and I hope that you'll consider lending us the weight of your name when we do. If you don't wish to join the mailing list, but do wish to express your support of the rights of indie musicians, please just send me an email stating that we may add your name to the list of independent musicians and other members of the music industry who support the formation and goals of SIMA. Saw the Kennedys and Susan at the Rams Head Tavern. And it was well worth the drive! Met a fellow believer (Ron-I think-but it was too noisy to be sure) who had seen the post about my intentions of going and came over between acts to welcome us. Thanks! The Kennedys, Pete and Moira, opened the show. If you haven't seen them, make a point of going the next time they visit your area! They are funny, engaging and are both great guitar players and vocalists. Their playing and harmonies are incredibly tight, and it's obvious they love what they do! They "practiced" the number from the Messiah (Blessed Are The Feet(?))for us. It really makes me want to go to New York for the recital next week. Bought a couple of their CDs after the show and got to meet them and chat for a moment. Susan was really "on" again and, playing to a lot of "first timers" including the couple we shared a table with, won a lot of new fans. Here's the set list- Love Down the Street Petaluma Afternoon Gotta See the Body Gypsy Lips/Vagabond Mouth Time Between Trains (with Pete, on electric sitar, and Moira) Dow Re Mi Paper Airplanes (her title- written Thursday) No One Needs To Know Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter Movie of My Life Like Bonsai Misery/ Happiness Standing In My Own Way and as an encore La Boheme This was another fun show at a great venue and, as always (with Susan), well worth the effort to get there. WARNING: Susan Werner may be habit forming!! Gotta sleep. And "Dat's all, Folks!"
