In our apartment fire, we each lost things like your mug that would probably have looked like "just another [whatever]" to anyone else, but were priceless artifacts to us. I just hope your mug turns up, or that you can get another one somehow. I'll keep my fingers crossed! Southern Believer __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!? I wanted to toss in my thoughts. Due to the fact that notions about proper grammar actually change every few hundred years or so, I'd like to announce that it is my understanding that EITHER "whom" or "that" would be correct. ("Who" would NEVER be correct.) In general, "whom" should be used for people and "that" should be used for all other "things," which, until recently, included dogs, lovers, other pets, and other collective nouns even if they referred to people. In this older English, then, "lovers that we lose" would be correct because lovers is just some noun and who are we to say that it refers to people. However, in this new touchy-feely era of grammar, it is now accepted and, in fact, considered more proper to say "lovers whom we lose," since, for the most part lovers *are* human. Either way, Susan is brilliant and I wouldn't change a word of her work. By the way, it's still technically not okay to refer to pets with "who" or "whom," which saddens me greatly. It is a rulen I defy with regularity and great joy. If anyone ever told my golden that she wasn't a human she'd have a serious breakdown. That's all. Driving from Boston I would take the Mass Pike Westbound to 495 South. Then (the following extracted from the Circle of Friends web page) Take I495 S to exit 17, Route 140, Franklin. Go left at the end of the exit ramp towards Franklin. After a mile or so you will find yourself in downtown Franklin. When the road becomes one way get in the left lane. After you pass a Friendly's on the right follow the left lane around an extremely sharp left turn onto Main Street and immediately bear right. Take the third right at the BankBoston onto Emmons Street. The coffeehouse is 100 feet on the right.
