I had a bizarre dream last night that I wanted to share with you guys. In the dream, my husband and I were at some county fair waiting to see Susan in concert. We kept looking for her all over the fair, but never saw her (we ran into Jane, and saw a lot of women that looked like Susan in her "long-hair" days). I was going to ask her to sing "La Vie en Rose" at the concert, so I suspected she knew that and was avoiding me! Later in the evening, a big storm came up suddenly and the fair had to close down and everyone went home before the concert. Any dream analysts out there? I DO tend to prophetic dreams at times, but we have already had our county fair here (and it's not really Susan's type of venue anyway. . .) I have a friend who does dream analysis, I'll forward this to her and get her take on it. I'm having a hard time imagining 'La Vie en Rose' in between the sheep shearing and the tractor pull . Kind of reminds me of the Blues Brothers showing up at Bob's Country Bunker and doing 'Stand by Your Man' and 'Rawhide' endlessly to placate the angry crowd. What would Susan do to keep the county fair crowd happy? 'Midwestern Saturday Night'? Then what? I enjoyed hearing about your dream, thanks for sharing. >>> Laura Burgess 10/01/99 07:50am >>> I had a bizarre dream last night that I wanted to share with you guys. Well - you just so happen to have a psychoanalyst on board! I could be waaaay off, but here goes; You are concerned that Susan's ever growing popularity will force her to move to larger venues and leave the smaller ones that we so enjoy now in the dust. This happens to some artists when they hit big (Shawn Colvin, Ani DeFranco, Tracy Chapman, etc). You are torn between the two desires. I think we all feel a bit of this dichotomy. On one hand, we want to spread the word so that Susan gets more (well deserved) recognition and more fame, while on the other we still want to mingle with her, see her in intimate settings, workshops, etc. The leap from folk to mainstream is a scary thought for us die hard fans that enjoy being close to our idols. The "county fair" analogy is an example of taking the "small intimate venue" to the extreme. Susan didn't show up there. And that left you wondering if you felt good or bad about it. That's my take on it! Steve p.s. I'm not *really* a psychoanalyst - it's just a hobby! I had better not give up my day job, that's for sure. I did the search on Musi-Cal using the 'house concert' key word and see that Susan is doing one in Hampton, VA on 3/12/2000 which is not on her touring schedule. Is this being hosted by a Believer? This happens to some artists This is called "projection" on Mr. Murphy's part. He's worried about Susan becoming too big, like Springsteen. Actually, since she asked, the dream means that Ms. Burgess is anxious that things will in her life will not work out as she wants. I am not a psychologist either, but I am channeling the late psychiatrist, Dr. David Viscott, so this comes from him, not me. Dr. Viscott has one more message, "Look at yourself." I think we all face this dilemma... we know that Susan SHOULD be bigger and more popular (is there anyone more deserving of real stardom than Suze?), but at the same time we want her to still play small, intimate venues and remain as approachable as she is. There's something special about our own little "cult", isn't there? That's funny that you say that. About a year or so, I had an odd dream that was similar (only in the sense that it featured a singer/songwriter). This was the dream. Pertinent information about myself that might enable you to share in the horror of it all; (1) I am a neat-freak (others would call it anal-retentive) and (2) I don't like crowds (which is why I like the small venues so much) So I sent this message to Christine Lavin about it (she was the artist in the dream); "Dear Christine, this is a dream I had last night and I was wondering if you could analyze it for me; One of the smallest rooms in our house is our office. Well, this room was jam packed with people and you were giving a concert in there. At one point, you sent me out to make copies of something. While I am frantically looking for a copy machine in my house, I am distracted by small children everywhere pulling everything off the shelves and and scattering it all over the floor. Now I'm torn between (a) My obsessive need to clean up and (b) the urgency to find that copy machine and make those copies so I can get back up to the concert in the overly crowded room that makes me claustrophobic!" Sad huh? Anyway -the point. She sent back; "RE: your dream. It means there will be seven years of plenty followed by seven years of famine." :-)) HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Fri, 1 Oct 1999 10:52:20 -0400 From: "Murphy, Steve" Subject: RE: I like dreaming. . . >>> Dr.Viscott has one more message, "Look at yourself."
