Any other Believers/Arkoholics in attendance? It was a small crowd, unfortunately for Susan, but good for us because things were very informal and up close/personal. Susan was in a waaaay better mood than she had been last Dec. at her last Ark appearance. Warm up act was Barbara Kessler, who was really great; she only did 5 songs and we could've heard more. Susan did: Love Down the Street (new? very upbeat), Petaluma Afternoons, LOTGSG, See the Body, Year of the Bad President, Gypsy Lips and Vagabond Mouth (title? new? she described it as the 'shy gene' meeting the 'flirt gene'), Time Between Trains, Sorry about Jesus, Ain't I Lonely Tonight (before which she said that if the the previous song hadn't offended all the Christians, this one surely would), the Sound of Music 'Dow' medley, Like Bonsai; then to the piano for Why Do You Bother At All (new? - co written with Shirley Eichhart sp? who wrote 'Lets Give Them Something to Talk About' who "has a really big house now"), I Was Late for the Dance, Maybe if I sang Cole Porter, Much at All (dare I admit I'm a little tired of that combination??), Movie of my Life. Then back to the guitar for, Misery/Happiness (title? brand new song - very cool!), Society Ball, Help (as in the Beatles), Born a Little Late, then encored with Yes to You (Tappan Zee) and finally back to the piano for the old standard Every time We Say Goodbye. She was also on a mission to get us all to write our congressmen/senators to put an end to Daylight Savings time; it was quite a prevailing theme all night. One guy took advantage of it brilliantly - when it was nearing the end of the show and she said 'well I'm going to do 2 more songs for you then disappear' and the audience hooted and clapped begging for more she looked at her watch and said 'but it's quarter to ten, don't you people have places to go?' at which point this man yelled out 'But it's an hour earlier here!' which brought the house down, and she relaxed and did several more songs AND 2 encores. Her cover of 'Help' was awesome, of course. At the end of 'Much at All' she kept playing in the upper octaves on the piano, and played 'Walk Right Back' (Everly Bros) in its entirety very slowly in kind of a music-box style - it was amazing, you could have heard a pin drop. I had not heard that twist before. She was very accessible and friendly after the show (again, different from last Dec.). We had our 'Last of the Good Straight Barbies' with us - she is wearing a beret, pearls, corduroy jumper, is carrying keys, has a gun in her pocket and a shopping bag with a newspaper and textbooks in it. Susan loved her and posed for a picture with her. The look on her face and her smile when she looked down during the second song and saw the Barbie sitting in her little chair was priceless. She said that she performs around Philly occasionally at small clubs and student hangouts somewhat anonymously to try out new material or do all covers and bills herself as Barbie. (???- well that's what she said, honest!) Other Barbie incarnations for future shows include Midwestern Sat. Night Barbie, wearing dungarees and a sweater with little deer all over, optional accessories include vise grips and a reliable pickup; St. Marys of Regrets Barbie wearing a Chanel suit with hat, veil and gloves; The Great Out There Barbie in Malian motley robes, rose-colored cheeks and clear blue eyes, Society Ball Barbie wearing a $25 tux, Bring Round the Boat Barbies - 3 Barbies in bathing suits cruising the Greek Isles maxing out Ken's credit card.....etc etc. sorry for the digression Specifically in response to the rumor that it had been her on the Kevin Costner soundtrack doing Something so Right - she said to tell you all that the only reason Trisha Yearwood did that song is that she heard it first on LOTGSG. I didn't get to hear 'La Vie En Rose' even though both I and Barbie requested it. After the show she said 'well, I just can't pull that one out all the time' to which I replied 'but you've NEVER done it at the Ark' which gave her pause, and she promised me she'd do it next time - something to look forward to. It was a sublime evening! Absolutely true. It was at a Barbie show that I first proposed the idea of this list to Susan. She didn't know me from Adam at the time although I had been on her stage crew many years before at the Appel Farms arts and music festival. I think she thought I was some kind of weird cyber-stalker.
