No, but I have a cardboard stand-up that was on each table with a color photo of the album cover (LGSG) on it. Speaking of quips at Susan shows, one time in LA Susan was talking about those puzzle maps with all of the states of the U.S. that we had as kids. She said that she had one but that her brother had bitten off the top of California. To which I quipped, "We smoked the top of California." To which Susan replied, "I'm sure you did." We got free signed CDs and coffee mugs (anybody out there also have a mug? Just curious). Anyway - she prefaced SSR with the story of going to the publisher's office to take care of the copyright stuff or whatever, and as she was going in Annie Lennox was coming out - she was also recording the song. SW spoke of being amazed to find herself in such in such great company. Then in August '95 at her next MI appearance she did SSR and my friends and I yelled out 'That was better than Annie Lennox!!' or something equally sophomoric and stupid, but it brought a smile to her face! And isn't it fun to actually make Susan smile? I remember seeing Susan at the Keswick Theater after the release of LOTGSG, and she sang a parody of Annie's "Why"... as in "Why did you have to record that song?" :>) - -Tim HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 22 Sep 1999 23:23:41 -0400 (EDT) From: Leslie Dreyer Kalra Subject: Re: Great Story I heard a variation on the Annie Lennox story at a concert. Susan was at her recording company's office (then Private Music), having either just recorded SSR or just been convinced to do it. The people who did the copyright compliance at the company found out, when asking for the rights to do the song, that Annie Lennox had just asked for the same rights. She described it as something of a banging-her-head-against-the-wall experience, like "of all the songs in all the world...". I got the impression that Susan was not in favor of doing the song (maybe just not in favor of doing covers at all), but the producers wanted her to, so this seemed like an omen. While the "passing Annie Lennox in the doorway" has a certain dramatic flair, I doubt that artists with recording contracts with decent-sized labels have to spend much time going around to publishing company wrangling for recording rights. Don't recording companies have staff for that? Personally, I've never heard anyone else's version of the song, including Paul Simon's, so Susan's will always be the definitive arrangement for me. I mean, aside from the fact that SUSAN RULES... leslie - -- Leslie Dreyer Kalra Techies, Inc. Some time later I recall mentioning the mug to Susan, and she commented that *she* had never gotten one. ... I had a brief twinge, but wasn't *quite* unselfish enough to share my treasured mug . I guess this was early in the BMG/Private Music days, when they were quite exhuberant in their artist support.
