Susan reportedly has allowed taping at some shows in the past, so ask her (or, better yet, check with her road manager Jane - she's the pretty lady with the lovely gaffer tape roll bracelet you'll see setting up Susan's gear). Remember that the artist may NOT be able to say "yes", even if they want to, due to terms of their contract - hence the middle category above. If Sooz or Jane give you permission, PLEASE follow whatever conditions they put on it (e.g. don't make copies, keep it low key, put a bag over your head, whatever). If they say no, don't do it. (I'm not going to get all hysterical about the legalities of b**tleg tapes, but I'm sure nobody wants to put Susan in a bad spot with her management, and this has a real potential to do so. Please keep her obligations in mind when you make a request, k?) Also, the venue may have "no recording" policies that over ride the artists permission. All very complicated. Consult the bouncer, your attorney or a Supreme Court justice. Having said all that: I would have swapped you my car for a camcorder at Sykesville Station last year. Seeing Susan sing the aria from "Carmen", while simultaneously doing a flamenco pursuit of a completely flustered teenage busboy, was a complete riot. Wish I had that on tape.... I tape a lot of folk concerts. My primary rule: I don't tape if I cannot get prior permission. I usually go seeking the artist before the sound check, or right after it (though they frequently "hide" after sound check). That said, Susan was quite happy to have me videotape her show at The Handlebar last year. That tape is a treasure for me. But please don't do it because I said I did. This is a discussion list, and taping is certainly a valid topic, as are other artists you enjoy, the weather in your part of the country or how you feel today. I'm on a few other lists (well, actually 45 or so) and I hate it when the list-owner, or anyone else tries to censor the members. That will never happen here. This is a community, the coolest internet comunity that I am aware of, and a most discriminatingly musical one. And thanks for the heads up on "something so right". Now I won't feel compelled to see the movie, unless I have insomnia. We got free signed CDs and coffee mugs (anybody out there also have a mug? Just curious). Anyway - she prefaced SSR with the story of going to the publisher's office to take care of the copyright stuff or whatever, and as she was going in Annie Lennox was coming out - she was also recording the song. SW spoke of being amazed to find herself in such in such great company. Then in August '95 at her next MI appearance she did SSR and my friends and I yelled out 'That was better than Annie Lennox!!' or something equally sophomoric and stupid, but it brought a smile to her face!
