Hi, I've been lurking for the last few days to get the feel of your list, but I felt the time had come to stick my head up and say hey. Hey! My name is David Percy and I'm English (Newcastle if there's any UK bods on the list), but I'm living in Sydney, Australia. I've been here for almost four years. I bought Time Between Trains on the recommendation of several Dar Listers, and I have to say, I love it! I'll curb my desire to tell you WHAT I like about each song, cause I guess you've pretty much dissected the album since it's release. I'm a bit of a fan of Dar (Williams), The Nields, Ani Difranco, Nanci Griffith, Marc Cohn, Cheryl Wheeler (you get the gist). Fave Aussies at the moment are The Bluehouse and Penny Flannagan - both worth a listen if you get a chance. I'm generally musically starved - acts that you Americans take for granted (both on stage and in the record shops) are poorly represented here. Although having said that, Dar and Ani have both made the pilgrimage (Ani twice in the last four years!). I flew to LA to see Cry Cry Cry and The Nields last December and am planning - funds willing - to go to the NYE gig in Northampton, Mass. Anyway, enough babble from me, more later, if you'll have me.... She is bluesy, ballsy, tough and tender - great singer/guitarist/lyricist... Can't say enough good things. CDs are 'Sweet Perfume', 'Fall from Grace' and 'Les Sampou'. check her out at www.lessampou.com/ From the liner notes of 'Les Sampou' written by Steve Witt - sums up Les better than I ever could: "Truth, poured straight from the source. No translation necessary. Raw emotion to pen and paper to voice and ears. And it's multi-anatomical, as the best music always is. It's from the heart, sure. It's from the mind, sure. But mostly it's from the gut. And the gut-bone's connected to the heart-bone. And the heart-bone's connected to the truth-bone. And the truth-bone's connected to the toes, the fingertips, to the hips, lips, tongue and lungs. You can breathe it, taste it, feel it, smell it, all of it: the life, the love, the anti-love." Les Sampou is playing right NOW on my radio. :) For those interested, it's in the Boston area (you can hear it as far as Providence), 88.9FM, WERS, the Emerson College radio station. They have a weekday (6-10am) folk/acoustic show called The Coffeehouse. It's not bad! They play Susan from time to time. Hint: their request line is (617) 578-8890. Press 1 and either talk to the DJ or leave a message - they check voice mail religiously. - -v - ----- Vika Zafrin ----- vika@fruhead.com ----- "I am writing this an hour later and there is still a small demon in my stomach scratching to get out. Not knowing any better, I just passed it on. So consider the source, and I stand corrected! In addition - as to the question of whether or not Susan reads SI - I do know that during each and every Ann Arbor Mi appearance she has managed to make one or more Big Ten (football) cracks, being from Iowa and all. Once during 'Midwestern Saturday Night' she went off on one of her half-sung/half-spoken riffs all about Big Ten football, it was hilarious - well, some of us thought so, and the rest of the audience didn't get it, since, as someone pointed out, folk music and sports seem to be mutually exclusive. Actually the very first time I saw her in concert she was wearing an Iowa State cap.
