It is just amazing the kind of people who join this list. I don't know anyone who both listens to folk and reads Sports Illustrated, never mind at the same time. :-) For any of you in the northeast, Garnet Rogers (with Mark Erelli to open) is in Peterborough, NH on Friday night in the great Peterborough Players Barn Theater. (I wouldn't even think of mentioning this on this list if Susan was playing anywhere near the Northeast this weekend. Looks like she has the weekend off.) Hope to see some of you Friday. The Gertrude Stein quote I'd always heard to be in reference to Radcliffe (where Stein studied psychology with William James) and the woman problem at Harvard: "There was just no THERE there. There, there Radcliffe!" is the quote I always heard. (Being a Harvard-Radcliffe woman myself.) But maybe it's also about Oakland. I've wondered if there's a there there, too. 2. Anyone know the musical 'Closer Than Ever' by Maltby & Shire? There's a whole song called "There" in which a defunct couple sings the word using every possible bent on it. E.g.: Woman: Still the fault's not mine Quoting Gertrude Stein There was just no THERE there There, there. Man: Thing's weren't always smooth She would try to soothe Sticking in her "there, there" there Woman: There, there. It's a great song bending the English language to the nuances of a relationship in a beautiful, brilliant way. For any of you who were also geeky English majors like me and love playing with words, (one of the reasons I love Susan) check it out... that's all, Margaret HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 15 Sep 1999 21:32:45 -0400 From: Katherine Rossner Subject: Re: believers-digest V3 #197 At 01:08 PM 9/15/99 -0500, Margaret J Barker wrote: >Along the "there there" front, I'd like to chime in: > >1. Having just moved from Oakland, I can tell you that the local story is that she was talking about, not the town, but her childhood home, which had been razed--probably to make way for one of the freeways. >I've wondered if there's a >there there, too. Well, yes...the Oakland Tribune flies a banner from its tower that reads "There". Yes, specifically in honor/refutation of Stein.
