First, welcome to Austin. Hot enough fer ya? KUT, the public radio station, does not play Susan as a rule, but they are very open to requests, and are receptive to learning about good music. I have ben known to call up and request people I think they'll like, and that need to be heard more down here. If you're so inclined, programs/hosts to try include Folkways-especially when Sue Fawber hosts (Sat. 9-2), Eklektikos (weekdays 8-2) and Femme FM w/Teresa Ferguson (Sat. 10-12 PM). The KUT hosts have this thing about themes, especially John on Eklektikos, and Teresa. If you can think up a Susan song to request that is agreeable to the topical theme they have going, they'll be likely to play it for you. Finally, when it gets near time for Susan's show at the Cactus, call up John while Eklektikos is on and say "Hey, John, are you planning to have Susan Werner on when she plays the Cactus in a couple of weeks?" John interviews lots (but not nearly enough of the out-of-ton folkies) that come through the Cactus. Both KUT and the Cactus belong to the University of Texas. Oh, there's a long-shot you'll hear Susan on KGSR. Either way, it's a commercial station "that doesn't suck" (as bad as the rest of them);-) > 2) Are there many other believers in the Austin area? Texas at = >large? =20 You betcha. I'm a native Austin and a big fan of Susan's, as well as lots of those Northeastern folkies who don't get don here often enough. > 3) Anyone want to plan some road trips to Dallas or Houston or = >College Station to maximize Susan viewage? I'm there. College Station is easy to do on a weekday. Houston and Dallas are each about 3-4 hours away--long haul on a school night. BTW, when I saw Susan here a couple of years ago, she went on a bit at the show about Bevo. For the uninitiated, Bevo is the Longhorn mascot of UT's sports teams. I think it was the ubiquitous icon of the steer's head and horns that got her attention. I believe Susan referred to having an "obsession" about Bevo. Twas very funny, especially the way she kept saying "Beeevo". - -shelly in Austin __________________________________________________________________________ Shelly Brisbin sbrisbin@jump.net Writer, Editor, Geek for Hire http://brisbin.net ****************Shameless Plugs (use the URL above)*********************** Buy my book: _Mac Answers: Certified Tech Support_, Osborne/McGraw-HIll Join my list: The Cheryl Wheeler Mailing List: cw@prismnet.com HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Tue, 7 Sep 1999 11:34:50 EDT From: PBCoustic@aol.com Subject: SW and Texas... and Texas radio The February timeframe seems to be Susan's regular gig down in this area lately -- I've seen her here in Dallas at Uncle Calvin's in Feb after the release of both LOTGST and TBT, and am also awaiting Feb '00... although I'm seriously considering a road trip to Austin as well, because her Dallas show is going to be a short one -- a Wednesday "lunchtime concert" downtown, probably lasting only one set. :^( But come on up, Austinites, we'll have lunch!!! (However, you've got to get one of the SW pins, to be recognized -- as far as I know, I may have the only one in Dallas at the moment!!!!!) NOTE: The phone number for the FUMChurch is wrong... it's 220-2727, not 230-2727... I tried to get some friends of mine to schedule her for a house concert here that following Sunday after the Houston/CollegeStation/Austin gigs, but she's apparently just been booked in California instead for that day. Meanwhile, I'm trying to get all my relatives and friends to get to her upcoming shows in Columbus Ohio, Atlanta, and Chicago at Old Town School. On a sad note, Dallas's KERA public radio station just stopped their evening music programming (featuring World Cafe, as well... DAMN!!!!) during the week, but at least they're keeping it on the weekends... Their playing of "Tappan Zee" is what got me started on Susan in the first place (THANK YOU!!!), and other SW songs were heard occasionally as well... NOW we get to listen to another talk show, instead.... grrrrrrr..... (OK, Rick Vanderslice, I know you're just the host of the show, not the reason behind the changes...) Anyway, in "Walk Right Back," the key lines are the last ones: "Walk right back to me this minute/Bring your love to me, don't send it/I'm so lonesome everyday." Contrast that with "I like to read myself what's in the morning paper/I guess that I don't miss you much at all." The narrator of "Much At All" is still pretending that it doesn't hurt, while the narrator of "Walk Right Back" is basically pouring his/her heart out. I thought it was a very neat touch: after proclaiming "I never shared your passion for the city," we hear a distant echo-- that what's really in her head, what she really *wants* to say, is "Bring your love to me... I'm so lonesome everyday." "Walk Right Back" isn't what you'd call a "moving" song... it's a jaunty, lighthearted tune. I'd never really thought about the lyrics until I heard it played as an instrumental... and suddenly, it really was quite touching. Of course, I'm probably reading WAY too much into this! When I saw Susan two years ago in Austin, she gently chastised the audience for playing "Much at All" on the CD player's single repeat mode. Maybe, even when you think you've moved on, subliminally that CD player keeps repeating and you always wished you'd just said "Walk Right Back." Anyway, I hope she plays it at the Birchmere. The first time I listened to Much at All, when the album came out, I took it at face value: she really didn't miss the individual in question. Then I saw Susan do it a week or two later and realized that it was not meant at face value at all, but I needed those facial expressions and that body language to drive it home. (How could I have ever thought otherwise?). Anyway, I've seen her do it with the "Walk Right Back" melody at the end, and it really drives home the point.
