I've been reading the list for two years now without ever posting. I first found Susan's music through LotGSG which was listed in Stereophile's "Records to Die For." I wonder how many other fans she picked up this way. I've seen her in concert twice now, once in Chicago and once in Rockford. But now she's coming to Colorado for Rocky Folks. Playing on Sunday morning, according to their web site (www.bluegrass.com). But, tickets are a little on the expensive side. I'm hoping she'll take this visit out West to play another show or two in the area. Any news or rumors to that effect? My wife (Karen) and I were planning on going to the North Atlantic Folk Festival on Sunday, but we checked the weather on CNN and it says "Washout". One could imagine standing (or sitting for that matter) in the Rain with a 5 and a 2 year old for 6 hours. It wouldn't work out. This leaves us wide open to attend the show in Shirley tonight! So we'll see you all there! We're gonna try to get there early so we can get front row. They serve a good dinner there at a very reasonable price. I think they open the doors at 6:30. I would like to explore this subject futher because frankly I don't understand why it's even a debate. I'm wondering if there are generation gap issues here - different standards of who should give up what in public interactions. I'm 51. To me, the question boils down to: Should someone do something that might annoy or interfere with other people's enjoyment, or should I refrain from such behavior? To me it's a no brainer, and I don't even understand why it needs to be discussed. I'm not denying that in the right situation everyone singing and dancing along with a performer would not be fun or appropriate, but as an abstract question, it seems to me that when given a choice of two behaviors, we should refrain from the one with the potential for interfering with other people's enjoyment. If the person sitting next to me is singing very softly and I can't hear them, it's not a problem. But if I can hear them, and it's interfering with what I'm hearing from the performer, then it should not be happening. We don't live in Finland. In Israel they used to roll coke bottles down the floor in movie theaters. I guarantee you woundn't like it. As I said in an earlier post, if you expect certain things at certain kinds of performances, then you know going in what it will be and you can choose not to go if you don't like it. But if I go expecting to sit in a chair and hear Susan Werner sing and play, then I have a right to expect that is what I'll get. As to the question, "Does it have to be so black-and-white?" I say, if it comes down to interfering with the enjoyment of other audience members, "Yes." Now of course there might be situations where everyone in the audience might get off on someone getting up and dancing and everyone's experience would be enhanced. That's fine. I'm not denying that. But those situations are rare. People who want to do such things (and believe me, I have as much or more potential for this as anyone on this list) need to be sensitive and not do what may detract from the experience of others. I could bring my Fender Bass to the next Susan show and try to accompany Susan, quietly. And if you or Susan find it annoying, I'll make you a deal. I'll only do it on a few songs. How's that? We'll compromise. How about I only do it on one song? I would also like to play a soft trumpet solo during St. Mary's of Regret. I will use a mute and I think you'll like it. Any problem with that? Maybe we are really in agreement but are just talking about different things, but if the question is "Should I do something that might annoy the performer or other members of the audience because it will make ME feel good to do it?" then frankly I don't know why there's a debate. Someone please explain this to me. Maybe I should sing harmony to everyone of Susan's songs, while Ron plays his trumpet solo and bass? I'm a pretty good singer myself... But maybe, I came to hear Susan sing her songs, not put my mark on them. A good friend and philosopher -musician once explained that everyone wants to be 'part of the show' now. No, they don't want to spend the time to really learn to play guitar or piano, or learn how to sing, or whatever. They want to participate without the work and discipline. No explanation needed, I think. And I don't think there is necessarily anything intentionally antisocial about some of this behavior, it's simply thoughtlessness. It's really hard not to sing along with the chorus of "Still Believe", 'specially if you have some circumstance in your life that makes that song special to you at that moment. It's an anthem, after all, and anthems are meant to be sung. Hard to envision a Dar Williams show where th eaudience doesn't sing the chorus of "Iowa", isn't it? But in spite of the classifications of the music industry, Susan is by her performance style, much closer to a jazz performer, in that every time she performs a song, she does it differently. So singing along in any realtime mode is nigh onto impossible, since Susan is singing "in the moment" and even she doesn't have more then a millisecond's notice about what she is going to sing. Hey that's just my opinion, and I think this sets her far apart from most of the singer/songwriters on the circuit. Now, some admin talk. I've always thought he was >on to something. Just last night I was complaining to a 33 year old friend about a 30 something guy at work who'd interrupted a conversation I was having as if I wasn't there. My friend said the same thing as your friend, "My generation thinks that they are all stars and that they are all entitled to the spotlight." (I'd be interested in knowing, if this is true, how and why it occurred.) In the '60's the Beatles and the other performers who were brilliant and made it HUGE sent the message that anyone, from any background, could be a star. In our generation it led to frustration because we all wanted to be stars but we knew we weren't. It was difficult to adjust to just painting or writing or playing music quietly and by and for ourselves because there was this mindset that if you weren't going to be Van Gogh, Hemingway, or Dylan, there was no point in even trying. This was the paradox, because you can never be anything if you don't start at the beginning - just doing the work without thinking about the rewards. Maturity comes with understanding that we can be content with just doing the work without being stars. The younger generation may have a similar mindset, but instead of being frustrated that they aren't stars, they think they already are. I'd be interested in other peoples' take on this. I didn't want to get involved in this one, since nothing we say here is changing anybody's mind. Still, I thought I'd just drop a relevant anecdote. On June 22, 1997, Michael Tearson was guest-hosting Gene Shay's folk show on WHYY Philadelphia, and had Ron Sexsmith on as a guest. Ron sang two songs, and then Michael said "I hope you don't mind, but I asked Susan Werner to come in and sing harmony with you." Susan then came on and performed "Wasting Time" with Ron, singing harmony and soloing on the second verse. After Ron left, and after playing one of Ron's records ("Lebanon, Tennessee") and one of Susan's ("Ain't I Lonely Tonight"), Michael interviewed Susan. I just got out the tape, and here's a transcription of part of the interview. They spoke of what inspired Michael to ask her there: something that had happened during Ron's previous appearance at the Tin Angel. Michael Tearson: ... it was a real sparse club. It was a criminally sparse club. Susan Werner: That's right. MT: And you sat down at the table, and you were singing these incredible harmony parts. SW: Well, his stuff is just so singable. I mean, he's writing these-- [singing] "I'm goin' down to Lebanon, Tennessee"-- I mean, it's just so singable. And there's not a lot of that stuff out there, and when you hear it, I drive off the road, I hear something like that. So Ron, you know, I just think he's terrific. MT: And there's so much open space in his records. SW: Yeah, lots of room. That's right.
