From the north, such as Greenfield take exit 20 to light and turn right. There's a map there, too. The bad news is that this will be Susan's last performance ever at this lovely historic venue. I was at the Newport Folk Festival this past weekend and ran into the fellow who's been booking and promoting the Bull Run as a music venue for the past three years. He had just made the sad decision to close the music series down there with Susan's gig as it's final event. The bottom line apparently WAS the bottom line out there, as the venue consistently lost money, despite booking some of the best singer-songwriters on the current circuit. It's such a shame since it's also been a very nice place to see people play -- an historic old country inn that also served pretty good food & drinks dring the shows there. It's just about an hour due west of Boston, but I think too many people had the impression that is was really further out in the sticks than it actually was. Whatever the reasons, the place never got the level of support that it deserved, and it's sad to see any good venue close under those circumstances. BUT, fellow "believerS" -- perhaps we can help send the place out with a modest blaze of glory. I believe Bob told me that as of last week-end there were not even enough advance reservations or sales to cover the guarantee to Susan. I know several people on the list have already indicated they will be going, as will I, but perhaps there are several more New England believers out there who might still be "sittting on the fence" about attending this concert, especially since Susan is playing the very next day a little further west in Northhampton, Mass. and again soon in Maine (not to mention her N.H. gig this past Sunday.) Still, I'd like to encourage as many of you as possible to try to attend this one, and to spread the word amongst your friends too. I'll bet Susan will try to make this a special event -- she likes this place and I know she's played here several times -- I saw her last there in April, 1997, I believe. She'll also probably have the opportunity to make it a fairly long show, since again, as of last week-end, the promotor said they hadn't decided if there would be an opening act. So it might be ALL SUSAN show!! OK, the other relevant detail I can provide is the phone number for the Bull Run in "Shirley, MA" (Susan loved teasing & making fun of the name of the town last time she was out there!) < 978-425-4311 > for tickets & info. The show is either at 8 or 8:30 pm. Like I said before, it's about an hour due west of Boston, close to Route 2, which is the main east-west highway in that part of the state. Easily connects to I-495, I-95, I-290 etc. If anyone's interested, I will post some more detailed driving directions to the list a little bit later in the week. Any chance I'll be receiving my pre-paid Susan Werner pins in the mail this week before Friday? I hope so!! And I also hope to be seeing a lot of my fellow "believers" out there too. Let's all try to make it a really memorable event for Susan and the whole staff who've worked really hard at the Bull Run for the past three years. And that's no bull!! I'll try to see you on 8/15 if possble, athough I have a few other things going on that day too. But I didn't even realize that the Bakery had music there during the day time too... Some good and bad news about Susan's show on Friday the 13th. At Newport I ran into the guy who runs the Bull Run in Shirley, and sadly I found out that Susan's show will be the LAST one ever at that venue! Bob has been losing money over the 3 years that he's been promoting the place, and it's a real shame since it's a very good place to see our favorite musicians play (and it had decent food too.) So I intend to post a notice about this to the believers list to encourage as many people as possible to turn out for Susan's farewell concert there. (I haven't had a chance yet -- and now I'm writig you instead!) So if you feel like posting something about this situation, feel free to as well. In fact, I was going to ask YOU to send something to the baigls list about Susan closing the Bull Run too, since I'm no longer current on that list anymore either. (Although I did see a few "baigls" at Newport, and as usual, Amy, Emily and the gang were in great form, and there was kind of a nice love-fest with so much of the crowd!) So, keep me posted on your future gigs. I know I'm going to be working Melissa Ferrick's Passim show the night of August 15th, but I'll try to catch your's earlier if possible. I'll also be looking for you Friday at Susan's show. Try to encourage as many people you know as possible to come -- Bob said there may be some kind of a "closing party" afterwards (but don't quote me on that!!) Also, I think it would be good if we had a really strong showing of support by Susan's fans for a guy who's tried very hard to bring good music to the area. The trouble is I think too many people thought the Bull Run was further away than it really is (about 50 min. to an hour outside of Boston I think.) Anyway, that's it for now... Spread the word as best as you can (or re-post this message to believers if you want -- since I'm probably not going to have any more time 'til tomorrow at the earliest & I was going to try to look up the phone number & maybe some driving directions, etc. beforehand.) I'll look for you there! I remember 2 or 3 yrs ago at Newport, in the "jam" set at the end of the concert, Joan Baez, Mary Black and the Indigo Girls did "The Boxer" (Simon & Garfunkel) - and that whole mob of people - must be several thousand - did the li-de-di chorus. That was cool. But not in the tiny coffeehouse!
