I was on vacation when all the pin info and mailing went out and missed it. I was wondering if there were any left around? I'm going to be at the Shirley show this friday if anyone who has access is going to be there. Regardless, it should be a great show. We haven't seen her since february (I think) at the Four Corner's Grille. That's too long as far as I'm concerned. This Bull Run show came up just at the right time !! Anyway, let me know ... First of all - what a beautiful night. Susan played in a bandstand on the shore of Lake something-or-other. During the soundcheck I was sitting on some steps at the edge of the lake, listening to Susan play behind me and watching the bright red and blue sky as the sun went down. It was so beautiful it seemed like a dream. My brain tends to shut down after extended periods of travel, and the intense gorgeousness of it all wasn't helping me stay connected to reality in any way. But, sometimes you experience something that you know is going to be in your mind and heart forever, and this was one of those times... Susan played two sets that night. Unfortunately, the second set was cut short due to a contractual f*ckup on the venue's part (Susan thought she had half an hour more to play than she actually did). In addition to that, the crowd seemed to mostly be people who had come to drink beer and talk with their friends. Still, Susan did a great job under trying circumstances. We laughed, we cried, we experienced the full emotional rollercoaster that Susan is capable of taking her audiences on. The sets were: First set: 1. Flying Dreams 2. Yes to You (Tappan Zee) 3. Last of the Good Straight Girls 4. See the Body 5. Year of the Bad President 6. Bring 'Round the Boat 7. Time Between Trains 8. Ain't I Lonely Tonight 9. (Bring on the) Beautiful Chains of Love 10. Maybe if I Sang Cole Porter 11. Much at All 12. Born a Little Late (The Baby Boomer Song) Second set: 1. Vagabond Mouth 2. Frank Lloyd Wright 3. Boy From East Dubuque 4. In Brazil I Had No Shadow 5. Like Bonsai 6. Movie of My Life 7. Standing in My Own Way Eight new songs of out nineteen played! Can a new album be far off? (And if not, can I put in a plug for "Boomerang", "Feel What I Feel" and "Rockingham County", songs which must be recorded and released on an album in order to help complete my world? :) "Frank Lloyd Wright" is an incredible new song that I hadn't heard before. It reminded me a lot of "St Mary's of Regret" - it had a similar feeling of great sorrow and love that's been lost, except using architectural metaphors rather than the graveyard metaphor. So, so beautiful (sigh) - Susan does it again. All the other new songs were great too, of course - the more I hear, the more I like... It was a great show - I just wish the audience had done justice to it, and the organisers hadn't screwed up. At the end of the night I just felt bad that it hadn't gone better for Susan. I feel lucky that I was able to be there though (the last time before I have to go home again, noooooo). But anyway. Enough blather. That's all from me - for now... sherlyn (now flung back across the country to the east coast but soon to be rubber-banded back to the midwest, then bounced home) ps - Beth - I did not see ONE SINGLE COW on the way out of Wisconsin, though I did see some in Indiana. America's Dairyland - HA! It's all a lie... =-= Sherlyn Koo - sherlyn@fl.net.au =-=-=-=-=-=-=-= [Sydney, Australia] "When I rise I rise in glory, if I do I do by grace Time will wash away our footprints and we'll leave without a trace Between here-and-now and forever is such precious little time What we do in love and kindness is all we ever leave behind..." - Carrie Newcomer HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 09 Aug 1999 20:23:31 +0000 From: Pat McAllister Subject: Newport Folk Festival/Susan Werner-less Just returned from the Friday night kick-off concert at the Hotel Viking. Performers included The Nields and Cry,Cry,Cry (Dar Williams, Lucy Kaplanski and Richard Shindell.) The concert was great but I couldn't help thinking of last year's opening night concert- Susan, Vance Gilbert, Janis Ian and Tom Rush. I guess I just wanted to see Susan play at the festival again this year. Oh well, at least I wore my SW pin to comfort me! Pat Hope to see some believers at the Bull Run on the 13th!
