Thanks Ron, this gives me the excuse for some OAC about one of my favorite artists. The first time I saw Susan, I made the connection between these two artists. One of the most striking things about both performers is that you *must* see them live to appreciate them. Loudon's work spans more than 3 decades, and although he is primarily known for his satire of 60's radio, Dead Skunk (hey, at leat that is how I read it) and other topical comedic material, Loudon is capable of incredibly poignant songs. He'll have you laughing along, then with a line, drop you into sorrow. Loudon is a somewhat tortured individual, freely admits it. I strongly recommend Loudon live to any believer. No, he isn't as flashy as Susan on guitar, but he has his own style, which is quite comfortable, and as a guitar player, may I say much more complicated than it might first appear. He is a great performer. And I disagree with Ron aobut his songwriting capabilities. He's every bit as good a songwriter as Susan, just not the same. I recommend all of his CD's from 1988 on, as these are his most consistent efforts. My favorite tunes are "Absense (makes the heart grow fonder), Not John (about John Lennon, features Richard Thompson on guitar) and "Jesse Don't Like It" about Jesse Helms and the NEA. http://www.rosebudus.com/wainwright/ FRFF is but a few days away, see you all there, meet at the left of the main stage after Susan's performance on Saturday, or find me on the message board. Not the best exposure she's ever had-- the show is low-rated, and deservedly so-- but it was nice to see her. As the show went to commercial around 7:48, there was a shot of her playing guitar in the studio while the host hyped her appearance. Then after the commercial, Sue Serio (normally the weathercaster, filling in as co-host) mentioned Singer-Songwriter Weekend, introduced Susan, and briefly interviewed her. The interview was full of questions like "Is this your first time here?"-- making it sound like she doesn't know Susan lives here! But Susan handled it well, answering "I played at Singer-Songwriter about four years ago." She then sang "Standing In My Own Way," with all the verbal syncopations she's added to it since the CD came out. It was a real blast of energy in the middle of a dull show. Unfortunately, her facial gestures, which are so delightful onstage, were kind of overdone here; the closeups made her expressions look kind of ridiculous. Ah well... no such thing as bad publicity, huh? And she did perform wonderfully. - -Tim - -----Original Message----- From: Katherine Leahy >>From what was said on Michaela's morning show today, Susan will be on in the 7:00 (AM) hour. It's a promotion for the XPN Singer-Songwriter Weekend :). I was volunteering for WXPN, and picked an early shift so I could see Susan later. As it turned out, there was a massive schedule change, and Susan came *before* Old 97s rather than after them. I couldn't see Susan's set, but I could hear it (although not well enough to make out the stage banter, and a lot of the music got drowned out by noise in the area and boat traffic on the Delaware). I borrowed a pen to write down the set list. Wouldn't you know it, though-- I lost the list!! I put it in a pocket with my shades and Kleenex, and it must have fallen out at some point. I do recall that there were ten songs, plus an encore. (A friend told me it was a really good set.) Here are the songs as I recall them: 1. Tappan Zee 2. LOTGSG (folk version) 3. Got to See the Body 4. Bring Round the Boat 5. TBT 6. (The sixth song was a new song I didn't recognize-- something about a party. Couldn't make out many words. I checked Sherilyn's site for the lyrics I remembered, but no luck.) 7. ?? (Can't remember) 8. Like Bonsai 9. Movie of My Life (only song at the keyboard) 10. Standing In My Own Way Encore: Born A Little Late Yes, "Born A Little Late." Who'da thought she'd pull that one out of the trunk?! (And I did notice that she added a spoken rap about Steve Goodman, and how his "City of New Orleans" was turned into an Ex-Lax commercial after his death. I've heard several people complain about this; they're apparently forgetting that it was also a Western Electric commercial in the early seventies, about a year after it was a hit!) Even though I didn't get to experience the show in full, I did get to speak to Susan twice (briefly). I was handing out programs at the ground-level gate near the artists' trailers, and Susan approached me from behind and asked me for a program. After I gave it to her, she took the time to thank me for volunteering! Then, after the set, right after Jane and a couple men had taken the guitars away, a woman approached me (Mister Volunteer with a Nametag) and showed me something she had found on the ground: a piece of gaffer tape with guitar picks attached! I looked for Jane but couldn't find her, so I gave it to Susan at the meet-and-greet booth. So even though I missed out on the full Susan experience, I did get a couple "thank you's" from her! Rest of the day was pretty good. Putting Old 97s on after Susan was actually a good move, since they led into Indigenous, and both groups did long, hard-rocking sets that complemented each other and got the crowd fired up. (They did extra-long sets since Duncan Sheik's plane was running late and he could only do a short set.) After Indigenous left, I waited 35 minutes while his road crew fumbled with the percussion set before I finally gave up and came home. Gotta save up my energy for tomorrow (Richard Thompson, Steve Earle, Kelly Willis etc.). - -Tim HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V3 #147 ******************************* --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
