Ellingson" Subject: Jake's picture of Susan Hey fellow friends and fans, What a beautiful picture, Jake! By the way, when is Susan's birthday? I know it's close to mine (April 3, 1965), but I don't remember the exact date. Three quarters of my family and friends seem to have been born in April, so there are a lot of dates for me to remember. Still believin', Chuck HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 25 Apr 1999 21:19:20 -4000 From: "Charlie Sweeney" Subject: temperance house, birthday HI all, First to answer Chuck, Susan's birthday was on April 6th. Since this seems to be a popular time for Iowans to give birth, one might conclude that it has something to do with the growing cycle of corn. It's knee high by the fourth of July, right? You should know that I'm typing this while wearing an IOWA wrestling t-shirt, with letters about 4 or 5 inches high, which could make me an easy target for Iowans offended by my last statement. Which also means I could send the Iowa wrestling team over to kick your butts, if it has one, which I don't know. Last night at the Temperance house I got a chance to meet some believers, and I missed a few, so here's the skinny on Pins, picks, large billboards----Susan says we have carte blache. Anything we decide is fine with her. David Kaskela has a new shirt which should be available shortly for viewing, and it's so good, I think you all may want to convert it to a pin. So let's wait for that image and go from there. Jenny Avila, a local singer songwriter and former member of the duo Amy and Jenny opened for Susan. Jenny is a stunningly beautiful woman, with a clear, sweet flexible voice who accompanied herself on guitar, and on percussion instruments. Her version of Guantanmera, complete with jungle animal sounds brought down the house. Her presentation is very folky, and very appealling, and if you get a chance to see her (she plays fairly locally around Philly)check her out. The jungle noises alternating with the verses to Guantanamera is worth the trip alone. Uncanny and lovely! I attended the second show, and Susan was funny as hell. I had the chance to hear for the first time "Boy from East Dubuque" and a new tune "Flying Dream(?)" as well as hearing LOTGSG in the slow fingerpicked version and TBT live version, which I hadn't heard since the album release soire in September. She also did BRTB and Bonsai which brought a sober silence to the crowd. She asked me later why the crowd grew so silent after Bonsai, and I told her the song gave us all a lot to think about. She understood that. We (the audience) and Susan also discussed Carrie Nation and women marking their territory like cats. At times I was laughing so hard I had tears rolling down my cheeks. Ya know, everytime I see Susan, it occurs to me that each show is a moment in time. I guess if you saw her everynight for a week there would be some similarity show to show, but I've had the opportunity to see her back to back on occasion, and it seems that the musical interpretations, and even the chat with the audience in new and different every time. I've even heard her do some of the same songs in first and second shows, and the songs are more than just subtly different, they are sometimes completely new from set to set. I think this sets her far apart from many of the artists I get to see, who present canned patter, virtually word for word, and even forget the words to the same songs in consecutive shows. But I digress. Susan closed with Movie of my life, quite masterfully played for yuks, and encored with Help and Standing in my own way We chatted afterward, and Susan expressed to me (and I'm now expressing to you) her deep thanks and appreciation for all of *your* efforts in attending her shows and spreading the word. Attendance has been excellent, all across the country, and she attributes that to all of you, and so do I. So thanks, from Susan to the believers. To those out of country, the trip to England is off for the moment (Sorry Rona :-( but it's certainly not off forever. Management is sold on the idea, but there are logistical concerns. Australia is not at this point an option. Sorry. Starting in May, we can begin plans for an encampment at FRFF. I've recieved some mail from the E-fans about this, so we'll probably try to move them over to believers to facilitate discussion. Currently I'm thinking of placing the camp near or even next to the Dar camp to allow pooling of resources, musical cross fertilization, maximized schmooze time, etc. It's a pretty safe bet Susan will visit. Ththththththat's all folks. Having just seen Susan last week at the Tin Angel I almost skipped this show. What a mistake that would have been. I called Thursday and got tickets which turned out to be in the second row. Temperance House may be the best venue in which I have ever seen Susan perform. Only about 100 seats and not a bad one in the room, plenty of legroom in a really nice atmosphere and a real honest-to-God grand piano. I wore my new SW T-shirt, which Charlie promised to post as soon as I scan a picture to him; and as a result finally met Charlie after several near misses during the last year. Also saw George and Susan from New York. Here's the set list . One song (**) I had never heard so I'm guessing at the title. Flying Dreams Tappan Zee Last of the Good Straight Girls Gotta See the Body Year of the Bad President Bring Round the Boat Time Between Trains Sorry About Jesus Ain't I Lonely Tonight Brazil Boy From East Dubuque Bonsai Don't Hang the Moon on Me(**) Late for the Dance Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter Movie of My Life Born Too Late and as an encore Help Standing in My Own Way Susan was once again as good as I've seen her; her songs of love and hurt, embarrasment and loneliness, all the joys and follies in those little slices of life Susan catches so well in that bittersweet way that leaves you aching for more. Vintage Susan! Thanks for the memories! I spoke to Susan after the show and she said she's taking a little time off to work on some new songs. Also that there have been discussions about her doing a one woman show on Broadway. Sorry tho', with the writing, performing and plans for another album it"s just not an option- at least right now. Charlie- the OK from Susan for buttons, pins or whatever is great news. I support anything that helps us meet other "believers" or spread the word of Susan's unique talant. Maybe I'll see you and Courtney (finally) in Manayunk at the music festival next weekend. See ya!
