Sorry about that Jake! I was wondering why Susan was playing on a Wednesday Night! Because she's NOT! I got October confused with November :-) Sorry about misleading all of you. Well that's good as it means I won't have to take TWO trips to Franklin in one week. Not that there's anything wrong with that... Lovely town! But this is a more general question, a poll really. What is your favorite non-mainstream music station, and where do you feel they are headed. Is the corporate mindset taking over RE: indie vs. major label airplay? Is there a future for the singer/songwriter without major label support? Is there something we can do as a music listening/buying group to influence change? Comments. please. Of course it was written a while ago.:-( Courtney Somethingblack.com KIDS PRAYER So sad so sad, the news that come our way this morning Like a bad dream, a dream you could never even talk about In a school, in a school, where we send our precious children The one place of innocence the world might ever let them know And barely aware of the odds against existence in the first place Of love and fertility and risk of a baby being born And of food and clothes and fear and maybe relocation Of sickness and recovery and music lessons, painting the garage And lingering over eggs and thoughts and sleepy conversation Of plans for the weekend and one last pause to pet the dog And glancing at the clock and the grabbing of the sandwich and the notebook Confident of nothing but the unbroken days which they've been granted But comes a child, a child so full of anger and hatred Barely conscious of the genesis coursing through his veins With a gun, a gun, a deaf and blind deliverer of madness Skilled in its efficiency beyond his own unformulated brain And his fellow creatures, school kids in their crushes and their daydreams Struggling to unwrap the ancient secrets of geometry And he pulls from his coat the instrument to shatter all forevers In a random blaze of insides and blood and endless now And boom and flash and again and not even when it's over Can any of them summon up so much as the sanity to scream And on the floor his classmates blown down, and choking As he lays his weapon on his desk, partly sure he isn't dreaming And from all the world they descend with condolence And to offer up their theories of what went wrong and when and who and why and how It's all those killings day and night on the television It's all the movies where violence is natural as breathing It's guns and bullets easily obtainable as candy It's video games where you kill and begin to think it's real It's people not having god in their lives anymore Or it's all of it, or none of it, or some of it, in various combinations Now all those theories they sound pretty logical I guess Though I ain't no scientist, I ain't no dissector of statistics I ain't no psychologist, I ain't no biologist or theologist All that I can do is offer up a prayer of my own Talk to your kids, play with your kids Tell 'em your dreams, and your disappointments Listen to your kids, and listen with your kids Watch your kids, let your kids watch you Tell your kids the truth, best as you can tell it No use telling lies, your kids can always smell it Cook for your kids, have your kids cook for you Paint with your kids, dust with your kids Be sad with your kids, be stupid with your kids Embarrass your kids, let them embarrass you Be strong with your kids, be tough with your kids Be firm with your kids, say no to your kids, Say yes to your kids, take it easy on your kidsYou were a kid not so long ago There's places that you go, your kids will never know There are things that hey know you don't know So draw with your kids, dance with your kids Walk with your kids, tell stories to your kids One day your kids, ain't gonna be kidsMaybe they'll have kids of their own Lets hope they talk to their kidsPlay with their kidsTell 'em their dreams And their disappointments HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 21 Apr 1999 21:36:05 -0400 From: meredith Subject: Re: Early Show Tin Angel (4/17) Hi! I've never once had a good experience at the Tin Angel, and the many others who have also had run-ins with them should really speak up. Maybe if they start realizing that they're losing business because of their utter lack of customer service skills, they'll get off their butts and make some changes. It's a pity, because it really is a nice room to see a show. Charlie polled: > What is your favorite non-mainstream music station, and where >do you feel they are headed. My favorite radio station, period is WPKN 89.5 FM in Bridgeport, CT. They are a 100% listener supported community station, which is beholden to no one but the whims of their volunteer programmers. The slogan on their bumper sticker a couple years back summed them up pretty well: "Some songs I like, Some songs I don't like." I don't listen to the station all the time because oftentimes there are shows on which I don't particularly care for, but the times I do listen more than make up for those down times. Since they don't accept any corporate underwriting or money from any source other than their listeners, they aren't influenced by *anything*. You can hear any kind of music under the sun, as well as interviews with artists and authors and musicians. They also have an award-winning news and public affairs department, which is all the more impressive considering that it's all volunteer. They are a member of the Pacifica network, so they're an excellent source of alternative viewpoints in the news. I'm happy to note that they are thriving, in their 35th year of existence and 10th as a completely independent entity (they used to be affiliated with the University of Bridgeport, until the Moonies took over the University and they cut themselves free). They're in the midst of their semi-annual fundraiser, too. They are working on setting up a Real Audio connection, which is going to be a very good thing for them. Their web site is . >Is the corporate mindset taking over RE: >indie vs. major label airplay? Fortunately WPKN doesn't have to worry about this, but most other public/college/community stations do. WFUV in New York City is an excellent case in point. They have been steadily becoming less and less adventurous as the years have gone on. WFUV is the first place I ever heard Susan's music, when _Last Of The Good Straight Girls_ came out, and they also introduced me to several other artists who have become very important to me (Susan McKeown and Merrie Amsterburg, to name two). But from what I've heard lately, I don't think they're introducing much of anything that's not on a big label, or somehow already entrenched in their consciousness. >Is there a future for the >singer/songwriter without major label support?
