Susan rocked the casa in Salem last Thursday at Martha Thompson's wonderful "Sing With the Fishes" house concert series, the first stop on her current West coast tour. Even a week later, I'm still buzzing from her all acoustic, but oh-so-plugged-in show! Susan was really pumped up for the show and looked great with her new shorter blond locks. Hearing her in a living room-sized space, sans mic really showcases the operatic range and power of her amazing voice. Without a PA or soundboard to worry about, Jane could take it relatively easy for a change, but of course she was still busy with all those guitar tunings! Susan started out the show with "Petaluma Afternoons," reminding the crowd that despite the Portland- downspout analogy, she really has nothing against Oregon! Her jazz inspired guitar licks and scat singing on "Bring Round the Boat," really brought that song to life. She naturally concentrated most of her set on Time Between Trains, but also played many old favorites and debuted a handful of great new tunes like "Year of the Bad President," "Boy From East Dubuque, " and the fantastic "Flying Dreams." Susan continues to hone her fine guitar chops, and heated up the Martins to red hot on "Got to See the Body," and "Tappen Zee." When she sat down at Martha's sweet sounding upright grand for a series of new "old" standards, "My Last Go Around," "Late For the Dance," and "What If I Sang Cole Porter," you could literally feel the audience's collective spines chilling. Susan obviously had a great time on her recent trip to Brazil, inspiring the awesome " In Brazil I had No Shadows" (does anyone know the actual title?) Most of the 50 or so folks squeezed in to Martha's tiny "cottage" had never seen Susan before, but of course they were blown away by her charisma and talent. Just like Roberto Benigni's brilliant "Life is Beautiful," she had them laughing and crying, often within the space of one song! Every time I hear her fresh interpretation of Dana Cooper's "Standing in My Own Way" (with, or without bagpipes) it sounds more like a hit single! By the end of "Movie of My Life," Susan had yet another new group of devoted fans. She encored with a hot "acoustic remix" of "Tappen Zee," and a sublime rendition of Antonio Carlos Jobim's "Corcovado" sung in Portuguese! Martha Thompson's SWTF house concert series is the most intimate and amazing live music experience in Oregon, if you're ever in Salem you owe it to give it a try. At the 2/12/99 Philly Tin Angel show Susan introduced "Late for the Dance" as a new song co-authored with a woman friend from Philly who was at the show that night. I guess old age does effect the memory since I don't remember her name, but I got the impression that although it has an old time feeling the song is almost brand new. >Susan obviously had a great time on her recent trip to Brazil, inspiring the awesome " In Brazil I had No Shadows" (does anyone know the actual title?) On 1/22/99 at the Bethlehem Godfrey Daniels show Susan played this song for the very first time introducing it as something she started in Brazil and was maybe/maybe not finished yet. On her handwritten set list it was called "Shadow", but when I asked her after the show she said she might just call it "Brazil". When she played it at the Tin Angel she had added a bridge between verses and the song seemed finished. But... to answer your question...(does anyone know the actual title?)... Maybe only Susan knows for sure!
