Ellingson" Subject: Oops! I forgot! Dear believers, In my earlier message, I forgot to chime in with my thoughts on the design of the buttons (and/or bumper stickers). I dislike the negativity of "Sorry about Susan" and "Susan is my co-pilot" does tend to rankle my midwestern, antisacrilegistic mind. I like the idea of Susan's fabulous visage with "I still believe." in ovular form around the top and "believers@smoe.org" in similar fashion at the bottom. I'd like to see purple bumper stickers with Susan's face on the left and something like BELIEVE emboldened above Susan's homepage address and "believers@smoe.org." But that's just me and I'm weird like that!!! In response to: Did Susan perform while she was in college? I thought she didn't start until after graduate school. She's my age, so I know she graduated from high school in 1983, which would make her a college freshman when you saw her in 1984. I'd be curious to know what her repertoire was when she was so young. Do you remember what she did?? Was she writing then, or doing covers? Do I sound like a rather scarily fanatical groupie?? I think that *does* make you the elder statesman of this list...:) Leslie lbd@techiesinc.com Leslie, I don't know if Earl is the elder, but I've known Susan since she and I were freshmen together at Luther College in Decorah, Iowa in 1983 and '84. We both sang in a space there called Dante's, which as of last year is no longer in use. (It was named after Dante Alighieri, writer of The_Inferno, which all freshman were required to read for an English/History course called Paideia. Dante's was located in the basement of the Student Union.) I don't remember her set lists from back then, but I seem to recall that she performed a James Taylor tune or two. Although we were both folkies, I also performed some Lionel Richie and Cyndi Lauper ditties. I remember that she lent me her guitar to perform these because I hadn't brought mine, intending to accompany myself on the piano. One of the many selfless acts for which I will always hold Susan near and dear to my heart. Although Susan performed covers, she also wrote and performed her own songs. I have a tape that she recorded pre-1984 of her music, which was religious in nature at that time. On the tape, she is accompanied by guitar, piano, organ and her sister Barb. (Their voices were so similar that I thought it was Susan's voice overdubbed until I was corrected.) While I lasted two years at Luther College, Susan left after one. That one year was one that I'll never forget, though. I can still tell you the names of all four of her freshman year "penthouse" suitemates in Brandt Hall. (By the way, Susan, if you happen to be reading this, did you know that they bricked in the glass circular staircase and made it all normal now? I was friends with the HDand he took me on a tour a few weeks before 1997 frosh orientation.) I have pictures, including those from our yearbook, but I don't know anything about loading them onto the net, so if you want to see them, you'll just have to come visit me in Milwaukee, everyone. I sure have enjoyed reading the postings from everybody and I look forward to reading any and all responses to my two. I'm also hoping to see Susan (By the way, I've only ever known her as Susan, never Sue or Sooze) in Chicago on May 1st, although what kind of gig she'll be doing at a place called WFMT Studios, I have no idea! Any info, anyone? I had the pleasure of preparing the Mason and Hamilton grand piano in the Maintenance Shop in the ISU Memorial Union for Susan's performance there. Piano tuning can be very mundane, but when performer's of Susan's caliber appreciate my work, the rest becomes insignificant. The Ames audience loved Susan's two shows and I'm sure would love to have her come back! At the risk of losing friends, I'll claim to be the elder statesman here...I'll be 61 in June! Take care, all.
