Toronto had a Werner-weekend, so I am no longer a believer who has never seen her. She was the opening act for Moxy Fruvous two nights, she played two different afternoons at two different locations of a bookstore and this morning, she was on one of the morning television shows. I saw her on Sunday afternoon. She sang about six or seven songs, all but two from Time Between Trains. One of the songs was a standard, sadly I was so enthralled that I forget the name of it. The other one was a new one - something about the end of a relationship, and wanting to see the body of the new love. All about closure. Susan was funny, smart, charming, sang great with lots of talk between songs with some of the people in the audience. She also hung around afterwards to sign CDs and chat. What a great time! She sang Petaluma Afternoons this morning, then talked with one of the hosts about Iowa, Philadelphia and her hope that she would write a whole album of jazz standards someday. She described her music on theis recording as a cross between the Indigo Girls and Rosemary Clooney. She is certainly a charmer. I hope that there were others who saw Susan while she was here, not just those who are all ready fans, so that they could learn how great Susan is. There were quite a few CDs sold on Sunday, so I'm sure she has a new group of listeners here. I believe that the Temperance House dates from before the Revoltionary War. It's a charming little place, and the concert room, if I recall correctly, is small and set up with folding chairs (!), so it is really informal. If you are coming from Indiana, the easiet way to go is I-70, into the Pennsylvania Turnpike, to the Philadelphia exit, then US1 north (you take the ramp to the left) to the exit for I-95 north. The next exit on I-95 north is Newtown-Yardley (Rt 332). Take a left at the exit ramp onto 332, and stay on 332 until you reach a large intersection with a shopping center to your left. That intersection is Rt 413. Make a right on 413, which will take you into Newtown. The Temperance House will be on your right in Newtown, which is a very quaint little town. Bring all your worldly belongings, as you will want to move there. I hope to be there as well, and since Charley often plays with his band Something Black in Bucks County, maybe he will be able to make the trek as well (hope so, Charley! Bring Courtney, too!). Hope to see you then. Now that I've relocated to Wichita,KS, chances to see anyone have diminished significantly! Did see Susan in Nov in Lawrence KS (3 hour drive), but need another fix! About venues: when I was a young thing, I opened for Eric Anderson at Passim's - it's a wonderful venue, and it would certainly be a plus to see Susan on that stage. Really do like the button idea for recognizing other believers - it would have been great at the Lawrence concert - we know absolutely no one there yet. Thank goodness and the Bearded One for this list - I at least can keep up with what's happening on the right and left coasts!!! I am another instant fan of Susan's from the Toronto show.. I went out and bought the cd today. Anyway thought you might be interested in my little story. Susan didn't have any albums at the concert so when she walked by our table on her way out one of our bravest politely asked where we could find her stuff. She replied, "You can buy it at any store, its under Streisand, Barbara." Then we all laughed, and blushed under our own stupidity... Anyway, loved the show, and can't wait to own all of her albums, and see her perform again someday... So I'll try to answer as many questions here as possible. Do people really call Susan "Sooze" or "Suze" ? Personally I usually address her as "Mistress Werner, Queen of Tonality whose strings I am not worthy to carry and whose very presence causes the Earth to tremble" But I guess you could call her Susan. Are Buttons a good idea? Hell yes. The Parker fly pin is not available. i called all over, including the marketing and sales departments at the Parker division of Kamen Music. No such animal. Can Jane kick your ass? Jane was just awarded her yellow belt in Shotokan, so yes she can kick your ass. However, I still outrank her beltwise in at least 3 martial arts, so even though I have (ahem) a year or twenty on her, I think she still can't kick mine. Seriously, I've been around the music biz for a generation or more. Jane is the best road manager I have ever seen. In addition to the work we all see her do at shows, she books the rooms, the flights, ground transportation, arranges for CDs to be available for shows, monitors the sound through-out the show, drives when necessary, and is best friend to Susan. Jane's amazing. A treasure. The best. Is the Bearded One Charlie. No, Charlie is the shorter, Beardless One. Can bootlegs be on a web page in Real Audio? Well, there's boots, and then there's boots. I know htey are out there. I'm gonna make a pitch for this. Susan may in fact have a few DAT's laying around of live performances, but I don't know the legal ramifications of this. I am in favor of some live Susan on the web, and Susan and I have discussed this. A good quality digital recording would be much easier to handle than a live performance. Is the public admitted to late night showcases at Folk Alliance? For those unfamiliar with FA, it is basically a battle zone where 3000 performers try to catch the eye of 28 presenters, this year in Albu-quirky NM. This is Alan Rowoth's discription of it to me. The public is generally not allowed on the floors where the showcases are held. But Carolyn, I have some mail out for you on that. Does anyone have a big tent. Well, sure. I'm a folky. Folkies need big tents so they can take their babies along to festivals. I fill my tent with my instruments and then sleep on the ground in the rain, so as not to track water in with the instruments. Go figure. If FRFF is going to be a big party, maybe we should chip in and rent one of those big yellow suckers locally. Will Charlie be at the Tin Angel on 4/17? Charlie will be about 15 miles north slamming the strings for a bunch of drunken revelers in a 1790 vintage bar. For Joe Grossman: Will Charlie be at the Temperance House? Probably, unless someone hires me to play that night. Will he bring Courtney? You have to forgive Joe. He's a lawyer trying to drum up business. Courtney is the singer in my band. Maggie is my wife. Looks like a conflict of interest to me ;-) Does my band tour? Nope, my band prefers to sleep in our own comfy beds and see our families on a daily basis. Besides, we'd be broke if we had to rely on music to pay the bills. When will Susan be in X-ville, Y-town, or Z-burg?
