I guess >that >: suproses me. I had to add that. I'm curious if the first time you heard this song was live -- forgive my memory, but didn't you become a believer after seeing her live? I think this can make a huge difference in someone's opinion about a song. As other posts in these threads have pointed out, where and when and under what circumstances you hear a song can greatly influence you, and it's a very personal thing for all of us. I've fallen in love with songs live, after the recorded version didn't get to me. Although I enjoy the music and the chorus of "Bring Round The Boat", I don't listen to the song for two reasons: 1) I've never seen it performed live (and I've heard some folks on this list say she does it well live) and 2) I don't care for talking on recorded material, either in songs or between songs. Although I love the banter between songs when I'm at a concert, I don't want to hear it everytime I listen to a live CD, and the same applies to songs with spoken portions. I know this is not an opinion shared by all, as some folks love live recordings, but I just plain don't. A friend once played a beautiful Nanci Griffith song from her live album, and as lovely as it was, I couldn't imagine sitting through the 90-second intro each time I heard it. (Don't flame me, everyone -- I love Nanci!!) Here comes the exception to the rule -- I love LATA, even though it's live. So, what I'm trying to say is that the experience is different for us all, and if you love this song, that's very cool. I'd love to hear your opinions about it. Boat's a different kind of brrr song for me but a story that still needs to be told. I guess it strikes at the heart of the truth that I too am not the ideal male (though not a Clinton or anywhere near as bad as the cast of Bring Round the Boat). Of course I haven't met a perfect female yet either so there's a little comfort there. "Bring Round The Boat" is the only song on _TBT_ that I enjoy listening to on the album, because I'd never heard it before the disc came out. All of the other songs on _TBT_ I'd heard before live several times, and as a result the disc was a huge disappointment to me. It features some of her best songwriting ever, but the studio versions aren't anywhere near as affecting or special as the live versions (all imho, of course). I think I've said it here before -- on the album she's not using her voice to its full potential at ALL, and I just sit there yelling at the stereo, "just SING, dammit!" But "Bring Round The Boat" is a studio creation, and I like it quite a bit. I heard it live for the first time last week, and I liked that version too, but I still can appreciate the studio one. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Sun, 31 Jan 1999 15:11:03 PST From: "Kelly Peters" Subject: hey Hi there, I have fallen in love with the song "Can't Let You In" and "Standing in My Own Way" from TBT. At this point we are a long way from a group discount but what the hey, we are skiing anyway. It looks like Thursday is the day and Sunapee looks like the place ($36). So if any of you want to join us let me know ASAP so we can be sure to connect. Also, if their are believers who would like to gather and share a table or two on Thursday let me know and I would be happy to make arrangements. Should make for an interesting experience. Lets put a Tuesday (2/2/99) deadline on this and I will call on Wednesday. I will email directly, within the hour, those of you who I have listed as skiers so we can confirm plans so if you are expecting to hear from me and don't then email me directly. Barbara, perhaps we'll also see you at the Horse. But, I'm still not as addicted as you are. I'll be the one with the beard. <<(: Keep believing, "The Bearded One" HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 1 Feb 1999 01:04:48 -0500 From: "The Bearded One" Subject: ??SW @ Iron Horse??
