I have to say that that song is very special. I am Howard Jones manager and some of you may recall a US tour Howard did in the early nineties on which we were extremely lucky to have Susan as our special guest support. I was working of course but every night I would try and catch Susan singing St Mary's of Regret. My mother is buried in St Mary's churchyard in Princes Risborough in Buckinghamshire, England and I live in St Mary's Square in Aylesbury in England. St Mary's church is in the middle of the Square, there's a graveyard, cobblestone path and wrought iron gates. In the summer my neighbours and I get together for wonderful picnics in the graveyard. Last summer I was almost arrested for playing my guitar after midnight. I usually wedge my speakers in the sash window (c. 1750) and the music fills the square. St Mary's of Regret is always somewhere towards the end......... If this song was ever to find itself in the right film Susan could be huge overnight but would that be a good thing? It probably would. She deserves it. I saw her perform these songs five years ago when she came to my high school. Unfortunately that was the last time I got a chance to see her perform :-( . On the new albums I really like "Petaluma Afternoon" and "No One Here But Me". Peace, Joshua _________________________________________________________ DO YOU YAHOO!? Has anyone else noticed this? "Life As We Knew It" was written by Pat Alger, and although it has a different chorus, the verses have a nearly identical melody. Anyway, as to my favorite, that one keeps changing. Right now I'll go with "St. Mary's" -- an incredibly rich song in every way-- followed by "Much At All" and "Snow White" (the songs that come closest to "St. Mary's" in the perfection of their construction), then "Old Mistake" and "Petaluma Afternoons". "Standing In My Own Way" is another one that always cuts deep for me. - -Tim - -----Original Message----- From: Josh To: believers@smoe.org Date: Tuesday, January 26, 1999 6:37 PM >My all time Favorite SW song has to be "Mid-Western Saturday Night" >and the old version of "LOTGSG". I believe that she is refering to Nixon. LOTGSG Ranks as an old favorite and one I sing to myself and out loud on occasion. My new favorite is 'Courting the Muse'. Esp: "She left me for a busker on the Spanish Steps in Rome." I'm not sure what speaks to me in that lyric but it was imprinted on my brain after one hearing.
