I finally got to hear songs I'd been hearing *about*, like "See the Body", "Year of the Bad President" and "Last Go 'Round". Susan was in rare form, as usual. Dave, I was right behind you, in the second row. Charlie *was* there -- I finally got to meet him after the show when he heard Susan say my name while signing my CD. (Susan remembered seeing me before, at other concerts, which gave me warm fuzzies. I'm easy to thrill, I guess.:) I think it's interesting how her stage presence has changed since I've been following her work. When I first saw her, she was just as witty, but much more shy on stage (if that's possible). I guess she just seemed very young to me (even though I'm the same age). Now she's definitely the stage veteran, with a whole new set of skills to draw on. It's kind of fun to see someone grow as a performer like that. Anyway, "Tappan Zee" was simply amazing last night. I'd never heard her improvise on that. The "Shadow/Brazil" song I found reminiscent of James Taylor's "That's Why I'm Here" album, which had a Brazilian flavor to some of the songs. Susan described the new guitar technique as "well, hard", and I sure believe it. I finally got to hear the new arrangement of LGSG, but didn't care for it. I'm still for the original one, with the subtle combination of innocence and anger. This new one seems too resigned to me; the second one too angry. The new Austin Powers glasses... smashing, baby! As Charlie said last night, it's time for a new live album. I also think it's time for a comedy album, but I won't hold my breath. Anyone who knows Susan only from her current recorded work knows only a small part of her talent, and that's a shame... Till the next SW Godfrey's gig, then. Wish I could make Tin Angel... And tying "Cole Porter" to "Don't Miss You Much At All" was an interesting comparison.. she sang "Don't" in an angry tone at the start, then went wistful at the end... a good blend... and she also added a bit at the end of "Petaluma" about dumping a box of Kavatrol (I think) into a glass of wine and "having your own private Petaluma afternoon"... I went to see Susan Werner in Pawling (if that's how you spell it...) and she was incredable! I absolutley love her and her music... but who doesn't??? Anyway, I got to meet her after the show and I was in such awe of her talent and I didn't realize that I was going to be able to talk to her. I made a fool of myslef talking to her. I never in a million years dreamed that I would have a conversation with Susan Werner about baseball... I wanted to tell her how much her music means to me and how much I loved the show, but alas... I freeze in front of celebrities. So, anyway, I don't know who this letter is going to, but I hope it goes to some kind of a guest book for this web site...
