I just returned from my weekend trip to Austin. It was a gorgeous weekend, getting up around 80 this afternoon. As for the show: My friend Alice and I were seated directly to and a little behind Susan's right. Jane had to run around me to get to Susan. The opener was Beth Donovan. Next came Susan. Rhonda was right about the fact that Jimmy LaFave's addition to the bill would shorten Susan's set. She played 16 songs as opposed to the Dallas show's 21. The place was packed and the crowd was pretty rowdy. Early in the set Susan mentioned playing Dallas the night before and asked "Where were *you* guys?" She really responded to the crowd's support and I had the impression that she found the Uncle Calvin's crowd "well behaved" (Didn't she even say that when she was in Dallas? I know she said that we smelled good. Can you confirm or deny, Paul??). After Susan left the stage, I grabbed the set list (saves me from having to write it all down ;-) She came out to sign things, and I asked her to sign and date the set list for me. Then Alice went on to talk about the fact that she is joining the Peace Corps. This got Susan's attention and they chatted a little about that. I asked Susan if she would be at Kerrville this year. She said that the Kerrville folks hadn't called yet, so she didn't know for sure. It had been a long day, so Alice and I didn't stay for Jimmy LaFave's set, though I'm sure he was great. All in all, it was a wonderful weekend. kellye0100,0100,0100 ~~~~~~ kellye culberth fumbler@dfwmm.net plano, texas HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Mon, 18 Jan 1999 08:16:34 -0600 From: "kellye d. culberth" Subject: Re: Austin > I just returned from my weekend trip to Austin. Yes, she did say all that, but then again, Calvin's is a "no alcohol" coffeehouse, which tends to restrict things like spontaneous applause and howls of appreciation... although I was tempted to "stir things up" several times, because it seemed TOO QUIET!!! Glad it was another good show, because I know performers really do appreciate good audience response! She seemed quieter, and frankly, tired. I had hoped she would perform Bonsai, and did not. In fact she performed just a few tunes fron TBT, and I felt somewhat cheated. Being a musician of some 30 years, I cut performers a lot of slack. Susan has been on the road for a long time and may need to recharge her batteries. I sometimes wonder if she has diluted her style to conform to the less vocally gifted of some of her peers - and it is hurting her emotionally. It's never been in vogue as far as I'm concerned to hold back when you sing - - unless it's that kind of song. Maybe Susan just needs a rest. Everyone can have a bad night. Now with the advent of email and the net, we all learn that Friday in Austin was a bad show, or she said this or she said that. It's much harder to be a performer now than 30 years ago. Cut her some slack.
