Ragged's a nice small mountain, but I think Sunapee would be the best choice. There are accomodations right there for those who want to stay, and it's maybe 15 minutes from New London. Plus the fact that I live 7 miles from the base of the mountain is a big plus! =) My wife & I have skiied there all our lives & can help out those unfamiliar with Sunapee too. I'm up for either day, so Thursday sounds fine. I just bought tickets for both shows at the Four Corners. It'd be great to get word to Susan & Jane about our plans... Charlie? I could NOT believe my eyes!!!!!!!! > > I can. It's called running a music venue. Well Meredith, we had some misconnect. I guess not knowing each other can make it complicated. Lot's of my note was "tongue in cheek". I thought the humor in my opener: "I gotta whine", would make that obvious. For example: of COURSE I did not expect to really get to vote, or to have any say in it being a split bill, since I don't run the Cactus venue. It simply surprised me & disappointed me. For a few weeks, their ad said only Susan was performing that night, as we hoped & strove for during the back & forth contacts when trying to get the 2 sides in contact. So, the sudden change was quite a surprise. > Susan "shares the night" almost every night she plays. Either she's got > somebody opening for her, or she's opening for somebody else (thankfully > that's not happening as much nowadays). Why should this be any different? Yes, I would expect an opening act before Susan, but like I said, her last visit to the Cactus was HER show (--I forgot who opened for her), & the crowd was "sufficient". If you knew the Cactus reality, you'd know very few singer/songwriters draw a REALLY big crowd, & some of the people who sell out elsewhere have had several shows there with an embarrassing turn-out (eg: Ellis Paul, Vance Gilbert ... just a couple years ago had very sad, low turnouts! Austin has a really curious live music attitude, reputation, narrowness, etc.. I'm not a native Texan, & have wished I moved to New England instead (for the music), EXCEPT that my blood is too thin!!) Austin is not the most supportive of many amazing visiting singer/songwriters. > >So now I > >can't even convince some people to go, because 1) Jimmy ain't their > >thing, and/or 2) I can't tell them who will play 1st (the performers > >of a split bill at the Cactus usually get to decide amongst themselves, > >and that is not until the show night)! > > Well, if I may say so that's a really lame excuse for blowing off an > evening of wonderful music. If Jimmy's on first, then step outside until > he's done. That's what I do when the first performer on a bill isn't my > cup o'tea. I hear this as sadly judgemental, limiting your reply to assuming *your* lifestyle. The people I would invite are those that normally don't come (--because I don't need to invite the others!!). These people have a whole other world of responsibilities & interests, & do indeed place live music a few notches down their list of priorities. And, due to their responsibilites (kids, elder-care, early morning jobs, etc.) they don't "do" late nights out. The Cactus shows start at 9pm (or a little later, in reality). So the main act doesn't start until after 10 usually. I fully realize that 9pm is considered early for lots of people (especially in Austin, where college kids do the clubs all night long!). But convincing those I'm referring to --even though I'm convinced they would enjoy it-- to find a sitter & deal with other sacrifices is tough enough without the extra unknown of *when* she (Susan) may actually come on. If *I* don't particularly care for the other half of the split bill, I don't want to set up these friends of mine to wish they hadn't come, by having them wait hours to see her, ...or whatever may happen! Yes Jimmy will likely draw a bigger crowd... which means we have to line up earlier to get good seats. That's okay --I do that rather often (though on weekdays it is tough, due to my job). But we can't really step outside during Jimmy's show as you suggested, and expect to keep our seats. Plus, you cannot buy tickets in advance for the Cactus, so I can't tell my friends to show up later just to see Susan. > >ALSO: Jimmy is an Austinite, so he plays around town fairly often, > >whereas Susan doesn't even get here once a year!! > There's the reason for the double bill, I bet. They need to know they're going to get people through the > door, or else it's not worth the overhead for them to open and pay the > performer. That is relative: she *does* draw a "sufficient" crowd, versus "more" --which Jimmy will add. I understand "more" is better, for the Cactus as a money venture. But you have too little knowledge about the Cactus to understand this case. The Cactus is on the Univ.of Texas campus, in their student union. It is an eatery/bar (called the "Cactus Cafe"), and makes good money. They don't need sell-out shows at night to stay open or profitable. > Plus, look at it this way: if it truly is a double-bill, at least her set > will be the same length as it would be if Jimmy were just opening for her. This is just plain wrong. When the Cactus does a split bill, both acts are shorter than if there was an opening act and a main act. You made 2 valid points: that Susan may not want to do 2 sets (I'd still prefer one good one! So my friends would come & see for themselves!!) And: that Jimmy's fans make become new converts. If they have ears, of course this will happen ;-} - -- Rhonda HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V3 #4 ***************************** --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
