Hey All! And "hey" especially to Audrey Webb... plus any other Austinites! I gotta whine: Did you notice that after Audrey MORE THAN helped to get Susan booked for Austin -- Jan. 16th -- SOMEone went & invited a 2nd performer??!! I could NOT believe my eyes!!!!!!!! Now Susan has to share that night with Jimmy LaFave (at the Cactus Cafe). I am *soooo* disappointed!! I simply don't understand it, really. Susan has done shows there by herself (--at LEAST one, ...I was there) and pulled it off fine, I thought (--no surprise!!)!! So now I can't even convince some people to go, because 1) Jimmy ain't their thing, and/or 2) I can't tell them who will play 1st (the performers of a split bill at the Cactus usually get to decide amongst themselves, and that is not until the show night)! I wouldn't go to see Jimmy, personally. He's fine, but I can only take so much of him & I have to be selective of my nights out. ALSO: Jimmy is an Austinite, so he plays around town fairly often, whereas Susan doesn't even get here once a year!! I am EXTREMELY disappointed, and confused... and BITTER!! (well, you get the idea... no one let us vote, & WE believers were the folks working to get Susan here anyways!! ...And WHO the heck decided it had to be split bill??? I would REALLY like to know... and have a discussion about it with them, too). Audrey, were you surprised, too? Of course, I'll still be there, ....but ... there's just NO reason to make Susan share her night!! Charley-- You know that woman who handles lots of Susan's "stuff" -- I'm not sure if she's Susan's manager or what... I think her name is Karla?? Would you forward this to her? Thanks... The squeaky wheel gets the grease, so maybe next time this can be avoided!?! ...still shocked, irked, and confused, --Rhonda HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 06 Jan 1999 21:54:01 -0500 From: meredith Subject: Re: a split concert in Austin??! Hi! Rhonda whined: >Did you notice that after Audrey MORE THAN helped to get Susan >booked for Austin -- Jan. 16th -- SOMEone went & invited a 2nd > performer??!! I could NOT believe my eyes!!!!!!!! I can. It's called running a music venue. >Now Susan has to share that night with Jimmy LaFave (at the Cactus > Cafe). Susan "shares the night" almost every night she plays. Either she's got somebody opening for her, or she's opening for somebody else (thankfully that's not happening as much nowadays). Why should this be any different? >I am *soooo* disappointed!! I simply don't understand it, really. >Susan has done shows there by herself (--at LEAST one, ...I was there) >and pulled it off fine, I thought (--no surprise!!)!! How many people were in the audience? (You'll see why I ask this question below.) >So now I >can't even convince some people to go, because 1) Jimmy ain't their >thing, and/or 2) I can't tell them who will play 1st (the performers >of a split bill at the Cactus usually get to decide amongst themselves, >and that is not until the show night)! Well, if I may say so that's a really lame excuse for blowing off an evening of wonderful music. If Jimmy's on first, then step outside until he's done. That's what I do when the first performer on a bill isn't my cup o'tea. >ALSO: Jimmy is an Austinite, so he plays around town fairly often, >whereas Susan doesn't even get here once a year!! There's the reason for the double bill, I bet. As a local performer who plays a lot, he's probably got a pretty large and loyal following built up. Susan, on the other hand, only gets to Austin rarely, so she hasn't had as much of a chance to guarantee an audience. As distasteful as it may sound, the Cactus Cafe is a business that needs to make money. They need to know they're going to get people through the door, or else it's not worth the overhead for them to open and pay the performer. If Jimmy can guarantee an audience, that's probably why he was put on the bill with Susan. Just think of all the converts she's going to win that night! Then she can guarantee an audience the next time she's in town, and the chances will be greater that she'll have the night all to herself. Heck, she might even start coming to town more often! Plus, look at it this way: if it truly is a double-bill, at least her set will be the same length as it would be if Jimmy were just opening for her. >I am EXTREMELY disappointed, and confused... and BITTER!! (well, > you get the idea... no one let us vote, Sorry, but a for-profit venture like the Cactus Cafe isn't a democracy. It can't be, or it won't survive to bring great artists like Susan to Austin in the future. >& WE believers were the > folks working to get Susan here anyways!! ...And WHO the heck decided > it had to be split bill??? I would REALLY like to know... and have > a discussion about it with them, too). Call the Cactus Cafe and ask for the person in charge of booking. I'm sure s/he will love to discuss it with you. :) >Of course, I'll still be there, ....but ... there's just NO >reason to make Susan share her night!! Then there's also the possibility that Susan doesn't want to do two sets. Two sets in one night are more draining than one, especially on a long road trip. My advice (like you ever asked for it :) is to go, enjoy, and be an enthusiastic supporter of Susan so she'll come back to your area more often. Be happy she's playing in your town even for just one set. There's lots of believers who don't get the chance to see her at all. +==========================================================================+ | Meredith Tarr meth@smoe.org | | New Haven, CT USA http://www.smoe.org/~meth | +==========================================================================+ | "things are more beautiful when they're obscure" -- veda hille | | *** TRAJECTORY, the Veda Hille mailing list: *** | | *** http://www.smoe.org/meth/trajectory.html *** | +==========================================================================+ HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ Date: Wed, 6 Jan 1999 22:15:34 -4000 From: "Charlie Sweeney" Subject: Kansas concert HI All, I'm forwarding this to the list from The Underdahl- Pierce Family upeirce@jc.net To all believers -- did anyone attend the Susan Werner performance at Liberty Hall in Lawrence, Kansas? How was it? I missed it, but will hope to catch her another time in the future. Does anyone know of Holly Near? Is she on tour? Thanks. Ruth ~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ (From Charlie)According to her web site, Holly went on an indefinite break from touring in May of last year. A link on her website: http://www.hollynear.com leads to Fleming-Tamulevich, her (and Susan's) booking agent, which gives the same information.I hope that will change soon. Holly is a wonderful performer. These days, finding your favorite artist's info is getting easier. In Netscape 4.x or MSIE 4.x it's often just a matter of typing the artists name in lower case letters in your address box and hitting enter. The Manchester gig got canceled along with several other folk shows at the same venue not because of tickets sales but because the venue was way over their head. They wanted to do folk shows but they didn't know how to negotiate with the agents. The agents got them to promise more than they could make, especially being a new folk venue. Eventually they got tired of losing money so the venue (a brew pub) canceled all their future shows. Susan's show just happened to be the first one of many canceled. (I believe John Gorka, Jonathan Edwards, and several others got canceled as well.) Regarding tickets, not to worry. Susan has done well at Four Corners. That's why she can get away with booking two week nights in a row there. Don't wait too long or you might not get a seat. Now, is it a good time to start the list of those wanting to participate in the ski/eat/listen-to-Susan day? How about Thursday? How about Cannon Mountain? It is far enough north to reasonably assure decent conditions. And the 80 passenger aerial tramway is a kick. $28/ticket; $19 if we can get 20 believers to agree to go together as a group. A free ticket for every 10 skiers (Susan & Jane?) Rentals are $24 for the day. or... Ragged Mountain is closer (and smaller). Tickets are $19; $15 for a group of 10 or more. Rentals are $18. or... Sunapee is closest with tickets at $36; $30 for a group of 20. Rentals at the group rate are $15. If you are interested let me know ASAP. Let's give it until January 18th to make up our minds. (We need to make reservations; Thursday will be the first night to sell out.) Bring a friend. (Lesson packages are also available at all areas.) Email me directly (grapevine@conknet.com) if you are really interested. Do you ski John? How about you Charlie? You will surely be getting tired of the heat by then Sherlyn? - ----- On a separate note. I'm a carpenter and most every day I climb one of my "Werner" ladders. Does anyone know; is their any connection?
