At the risk of > drawing fire from the ranks, I must say that I did not find it as > interesting or compelling as the recorded version. She sang the more folksy version of LOTGSG at the Birchmere in Alexandria, VA, a couple of weeks ago as well. She introduced the song by saying she's done it both ways and lately is leaning toward the quieter, more folksy, version. Our reactions were interesting -- my spouse didn't like it nearly as much as the recorded (LOTGSG) version, while I thought it was almost a different song. For me anyway, the version on LOTGSG has a decidedly harder, angrier edge, while the version she's apparently doing now is somehow more sorrowful and wistful. I was just re-playing both the LOTGSG version and the one from L@TA and I found the latter to be neither angry nor wistful, more just a straight story. So, there seem to be at least three versions out there. Which one do I like "best?" Well, it depends on my mood. Certainly I can be angry about the kinds of changes she documents in the song and when I am, the LOTGSG version plays to those feelings. But more and more I find that being angry all the time is exhausting, and I'm becoming increasingly cynical and reflective. In those moods, the slower version is more appealing to me. I guess I was in a more reflective state of mind at the Birchmere concert, because I rather liked the slower version. Susan was apparently in a reflective state too, because after the song, she noted that the venue is in a decidedly mixed neighborhood, and commented that we always seem to think of the woman in the song as being white, but that may not be true. Just some thoughts on the various versions of the song, for reaction/comments. EC.... This is only the second time I've posted, but the FIRST intelligent post. Last time, I asked if anyone was planning to drive to any Susan shows in the surrounding states, and if I could join them... Then I actually checked the Musi-cal list... DUH!! Susan is actually coming to my town! Thank God! So, another question... Anyone on the list going to the Nashville show? It's on Dec. 2nd at the Bluebird Cafe. Email me... I'd love to meet up with you Believers. :) Smiles, Misty HELP! owner-believers@smoe.org Send mail to believers@smoe.org Susan's CD's are available on your desktop at songs.com ------------------------------ End of believers-digest V2 #199 ******************************* --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- -------------------------- This has been a posting from the Susan Werner believers-digest To unsubscribe send mail to Majordomo@smoe.org with "unsubscribe believers-digest" in the body of the message
