She was double-billed with Cheryl Wheeler, Susan opened. She started with a song on piano that I had not heard before called "Long Beach Romance"(?). She did Tappan Zee, Your Old Mistake, 'Bring Round the Boat, Show Me the Body, Don't Miss You Much At All, Maybe If I Sang Cole Porter, Last of the Good Straight Girls, Sorry About Jesus, Jesus Christ I'm Lonely Tonight, and closed with Movie. She encored( a real encore!) with The Great Out There. I was surprised at the selection of tunes. Hardly anything from the new CD. She did a killer (silenced them for several seconds after completion) version of Old Mistake. God, what a fabulous song! Show me the Body was cute and she hammed it up appropriately. Sorry About Jesus is interesting to see live. In the first verse the audience giggled and then snapped to attention as the song went on. It is quite sobering and has the power to really grab people. When she introduced Jesus Christ I'm Lonely Tonight, she said if the latter tune hadn't chased all the Christians out of the room, the next tune might do it! No one left.... She performed a quiet and very folky version of LOTGSG. At the risk of drawing fire from the ranks, I must say that I did not find it as interesting or compelling as the recorded version. I was deeply disappointed that she did not do TBT and Bonsai. BUT - a Susan concert is always a great concert no matter what she plays, and I have to say that the 3 hour drive was worth it just to hear Your Old Mistake. She just breaks my heart with that song. I always listen to chatter between sets to hear what people have to say about performances, and from what I heard, Susan sold CDs last night based on that song. It just seems to emotionally level people like a bulldozer. Cheryl came out after a 15 minute break, and was typical Cheryl: funny, outrageous and sad. She said she was uncomfotable because she had begun wearing a bra - just for us! She sang a little ditty about Paula Jones getting $850,000 just because a guy said "willya?". I always just said, "No asshole", I never expected to get rich from it, said Cheryl. Her performance musically was much quieter, and somehow very sad. She still talks about the split with her companion of 14 years, three years ago. The line "It's not that you left, but why you stayed so long" that seemed to say so much to me. Personally, IMHO, Susan should have come out second. Her energy level really overshadowed Cheryl. Charlie, you had said that you hoped Susan wouldn't blow Cheryl off the stage - she did. Apologies to others that saw the show if I didn't get the order of songs quite right! I know some of the neighborhood that seems to be about (in Philly area); I know a good, straight, corduroy-jumper-and-pearls gal I could picture in the situation, and the sad power of "key in hand and a gun in the pocket" still brings tears to my eyes. That was my first exposure to Susan, so I remember it well. She performed Rubber Glove Blues live in the studio during the interview. I spent many months after that trying to find out where I could hear her perform... At least, that's the one I remember. There might have been another interview with someone else around the same time. Either way, it would be fantastic to hear her interviewed by a master like Terry Gross... I was surprised to hear that the live version of this song is less popular. When I heard Susan last week she did an interesting ending - -- there were guns everywhere -- and I enjoyed the different interpretation.
