Rob and everyone - I totally agree! I have been thinking about contacting Fresh Air with a viewers suggestion. Even if it was done a previously, Terry likes to do follow-ups on emerging careers. And there must already be a connection there, because Susan gave a thank you to Gene Shay of WHYY ( at that time at least) on the Tin Angel liner notes. For those of you who don't follow the show, it's distributed to most, if not all NPR stations, which means national exposure for Susan. And Terry Gross really does her homework when she does an interview - listens to the music, reads the book, sees the movie, or whatever. She would be the one to get to the stories behind the songs, behind the career decisions etc. Let's go for this if there is a possibility that Susan's schedule would allow it at some point. I think this is an EXCELLENT idea. Fresh Air is a wonderful program. I listen to it whenever I can. > For those of you who don't follow the show, it's distributed > to most, if not > all NPR stations, which means national exposure for Susan. I know it's covered here in Southern California. Alas, it isn't as often as I'd like, because KCRW broadcasts it in the mid-afternoons, before I'm off work. I've considered taping it at times. I would most certainly tape it if/when Susan is on. > And Terry Gross > really does her homework when she does an interview - listens > to the music, > reads the book, sees the movie, or whatever. We should probably see if this is desirable to Susan before we launch a campaign. Though, I don't have much doubt, I would feel better if we checked, first. Would someone who has her ear sometime, ask her? KCRW also has Morning Becomes Eclectic, which tapes out here in Santa Monica. Anyone know if that's a national, too? It's a great show that tapes in-house performances and interviews. I would love to hear her do that one, too. If you want to wait a couple days I'll check it out with Susan. We have back to back presentations at a local college. Larry Goldfarb, one of Susan's managers is giving a course on music promotion, and both Susan and I are invited to lecture. The Fresh Air archives only go back to 1993. I know that I heard Susan on one of the WHYY interview programs in 1990 or 1991. The interviewer was either Terry Gross or Marti Moss-Coane. They played tracks from Midwestern Saturday Night, specifically Midwestern Saturday Night, Babyboomers, and Rubber Glove Blues. Until that time, I had only heard *of* Susan, not actually heard her, although the lead singer in my band was pestering me to do Babyboomers. Living in Indiana, and having a life that prevents me from getting to either coast easily, I have been waiting months to see Susan in Chicago in mid-December. However, two blood-chilling pieces of information recently appeared in this list: 1. Susan is only the opening act at the Chicago show (although I'll enjoy seeing John Gorka, based on the good things I've heard about him). 2. Susan didn't play "Like Bonsai" at a recent show. Horror of horrors -- I may not get to hear her play my favorite songs! :) Now, to be fair, many of you have said that seeing Susan do a not-so-favorite song live has turned that song into a favorite, but I'm really hoping to hear a couple of my very most favorites. What I want to know is if Susan has entertained audience requests in the past, or if she has a preplanned set list when she performs. I'd love to see her perform "The Great Out There", "Tappan Zee" and "Like Bonsai", but a move to the East Coast is not in the cards for me! Debbie P.S. THANK YOU to all of you who take the time to write up the set lists. It really is appreciated. She played "Can't Let You In," "Bonsai," "Bring Round the Boat," (VERY effective reverb guitar work supporting the rap line!!! I had been trying to imagine this played live solo... David jokingly described it as "BeeGee's guitar," and Susan revealed the C bottom string tuning used on the tune) and finished with "Sorry About Jesus" with the brief background story of the particular high school friend involved... they also discussed Susan's thoughts on "trying to become a better writer." Good stuff...
